The long-standing Peace Studies Certificate Program at California State University, Long Beach is in the process of being upgraded into a minor that will be competitive with other Peace Studies Programs in the region.
The new minor will be called Peace and Social Justice Studies, and will span multiple disciplines and colleges, including the natural sciences, health and human services, the arts, and education. The minor is founded on two main premises. First, war and other forms of violence are not inevitable, despite their widespread occurrence over time and space. Second, peace without social justice is not possible. The central focus of the minor is to develop an understanding of the underlying causes of violence and conflict that occur at multiple social, cultural, and economic levels and to develop strategies for creating peace in an increasingly globalized world.
