The CSULB Foundation will hold a university-wide food drive from November 3 - 24 on behalf of the Center for Behavioral Research and Services (CBRS) to benefit their clients as well as local individuals and families who are economically disadvantaged or homeless.
The Center, which operates a food bank in addition to conducting social and behavioral research on issues such as substance abuse, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, has started receiving requests for food services from a different segment of the population – people of retirement age who have never before sought assistance, according to Grace Reynolds, CBRS Associate Director and a Health Care Administration professor.
“This year, with the economic downturn, we are already experiencing greater demand and we anticipate that it will increase as Thanksgiving and the winter holidays approach,” Reynolds said. “Our usual food sources are extremely strained trying to meet the needs of all the food distribution sites, so anything extra will be greatly appreciated.”
The Foundation is accepting non-perishable foods. High demand items include canned meats like tuna, salmon and chicken, canned stew, rice, beans and individually packaged juices. Canned foods with pull tops are preferred. Pre-packaged plastic utensils are also needed. Clothing, such as T-shirts, sweatshirts and socks will also be accepted. Food will be collected at the following locations:
