I hope you’ve had a productive and relaxing summer. I know many of you spent the summer conducting research and teaching our students across the globe. In fact, nearly 480 students completed courses taught by California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) faculty in 30 countries around the world this summer. It is wonderful to see so many faculty and students make international education a priority.
The year ahead promises to be an exciting one as we implement new initiatives and enhance existing programs that support academic success, strengthen research, scholarly and creative activity, promote global engagement, and encourage community service. I am especially pleased to welcome Dr. Lynn Mahoney, our associate vice president for undergraduate studies, and Dr. Jeet Joshee, new dean of University College and Extension Services, both of whom started this month.
I would also like to welcome the 35 new professors who will be joining the faculty this year. You are joining the university at a very exciting time. This year, the six-year, freshmen graduation rate topped 52 percent – an 11 percent increase in only five years and a new campus record. In addition, we are expecting a record numbers of freshmen and continuing students, bringing fall enrollment to about 38,000 students.
I look forward to working with you as we continue to promote academic excellence and I hope to see you on Friday, August 29 at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center for the 2008 Annual Convocation.
