Record numbers of freshmen, incoming transfer students and continuing students are attending California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) this fall, bringing enrollment to nearly 38,000 students.
“CSULB is experiencing very strong enrollment demand,” said David Dowell, Vice Provost for Planning and Budgets. “The university has continued to increase in popularity and now is a highly attractive destination campus for many students. For fall 2008, CSULB will have one of the best academically qualified groups of new students in its history as well as one of the largest.”
Fall enrollment figures include:
-
4,600 new freshmen, about 400 more than last year
-
3,200 new transfers
-
27,500 continuing students, about 1,250 additional students from last year
-
2,200 new post-baccalaureate and graduate students
Several factors are playing a role in CSULB’s strong enrollment. The number of high school graduates reached its peaked this year; more students are going to school or staying in college due to the weakened economy; and CSULB is a top choice because it is recognized as one of the best-value educational opportunities in the nation. In addition, efforts to promote student success are translating into a rising continuation rate.
Because of the high demand, CSULB will not accept applications from undergraduate transfer students for the spring 2009 semester. It will accept applications from undergraduate transfer students for fall 2009.
“Although demand is strong, the University will be able to manage effectively and it is vitally important that we do so,” Dowell said. “We are now cautiously optimistic about the state budget situation. We are committed to well-serving the students who have already been admitted for the fall semester with full schedules of classes, regardless of budget uncertainty.”
