Faculty, Students and Staff Highlights

Cole Conservatory of Music students Mike Briones and Jonathan Bradley and recent CSULB graduate Jimmy Emerzian will be touring Europe this summer with Joey Fatone and also the Backstreet Boys.

The CSULB Speech and Debate Team won first place at the National Forensics Association National Championship Tournament in April — one of several strong finishes at national tournaments this spring. CSULB's team is ranked in the "elite eight" in individual events and in the top 20 in parliamentary debate in (open division) nationally.  In the last six years, CSULB has brought home seven national championships in speech and debate events. Aerospace Engineering Professor Eric Besnard, his students and industry partner Garvey Spacecraft Corporation (GSC) staged another successful experimental rocket launch in April. They conducted a flight test of the Prospector 14 LOX-Methane (P-14LM) prototype launch vehicle that featured a 1,000 lbf-thrust LOX/methane rocket engine developed by CSULB students.  It is believed that this is the first such powered flight of this cryogenic propellant combination, which is under consideration for applications in a variety of future space exploration initiatives, such as those funded by NASA for future Reaction Control System and in-space main propulsion systems.  Read more.

Ryan Brown, who graduated from CSULB’s Music Department in 2000, has been awarded a 2008 Morton Gould Young Composer Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. He will begin his doctoral studies at Princeton in the fall.

James Manseau Sauceda, Director of the CSULB Multicultural Center was among the guest speakers at this year’s Ethics at the Beach, a half-day on-campus ethics seminar for students. Patricia Eyres, Attorney at Law, and Kurtis Oakley, Ethics Program Manager at Northrup Grumman Corporation also shared their expertise on ethical communication in a global society at the event in April.
