There are new options available to help students fulfill the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) if they do not pass the Writing Proficiency Examination.
Students can meet the requirement by successfully completing an assessment connected to one of the following five upper-division, writing-intensive courses: COTA 300, ENGR 310, ENGL 301B, HIST 301, or IS 301L. A sixth course, FMD 452, will be available in Fall 2008.
Students can also enroll in the new English Writing Proficiency (EWP) course, a non-credit, online, English writing skills course offered through University College Extension Services. This 10-week course, which provides students with a minimum of two hours per week of instruction, is designed for students who need remediation but do not have access to on-campus resources. EWP is not a GWAR course, but is designed to help students to pass the Writing Proficiency Examination or the analytic writing portion of the GRE or GMAT.
In addition, students can continue to receive help from the Learning Assistance Center in the Horn Center and the Writing Resource Lab in Language Arts Building 212.
The GWAR calls for students to demonstrate upper-division academic writing competence in order to obtain a degree or certificate from California State University, Long Beach. For more information on the GWAR or Writing Proficiency Exam, contact Dr. Linda Sarbo at extension 5-8102.
