2013 Academic Affairs Annual Report

Taking Pride in a Great Public University

A

s we look back on the 2012-13 year, we can be proud of our accomplishments, our recognitions and most of all for serving our students well. Working together, we accomplished a great deal.

  • Despite budget challenges, we awarded 8,628 degrees in 2013 - an increase of 38 percent compared to a decade ago when enrollment was 3 percent smaller.

  • Our graduation rate has risen 10 percent in five years and nearly 20 percent in a decade.

  • We focused on providing more support for courses with low pass rates. One example of the success of these efforts is Chemistry 111A, which has seen an 85 percent pass rate and become a model for other CSU campuses to emulate.

  • We implemented new admissions guidelines that better link academic preparation with specific majors.

  • We obtained $1.5 million in funding in a competitive process conducted by the Chancellor's Office. These funds will support technology blended learning to some of our most challenging gateway classes, cutting edge electronic advising tools and a new undergraduate research program aimed at diversifying our student involvement in research with faculty.

  • We established 24 online courses, including impacted classes, from a variety of disciplines.

  • We began offering new programs and approved future programs that address the need for health care providers, engineers and technology in education. Programs include two new doctoral degrees that will play a critical role in the state’s future healthcare needs — a doctor of physical therapy and a doctor of nursing practice, as well as a new graduate level certificate that will prepare future health professionals to offer services for the nation’s largest minority – Latinos.

Academic Programs

We are proud of the quality of our programs, several of which were recognized for excellence in 2012-13:

  • The College of Business Administration was listed in the Princeton Review's Best Business Schools: 2013 Edition.

  • The College of Engineering received The Boeing Co.'s “Supplier of the Year” award for exceptional performance and contributions to Boeing’s overall success in 2012.

  • Our M.S. in Healthcare Administration-Accelerated program was ranked among the leading business graduate schools by Modern Healthcare, the leading health care industry trade journal.

  • The Fashion Merchandising and Design Program was listed among the top 75 fashion design schools in the United States by Fashion-Schools.org.

  • The Foundational Level Math and General Science program, which provides training and credentials to laid-off Long Beach Unified School District teachers, was recognized by the Association for Continuing Higher Education.

  • The Master of Science in Emergency Services Administration program was recognized as a model in a Federal Emergency Management Agency report.

Faculty and Staff

We are proud that last year our remarkable and dedicated faculty achieved many accolades and honors and won a good deal of external funding. Among those recognized for excellence in teaching and advising were:

  • Dr. Britt Rios-Ellis, CSULB's Outstanding Professor Award

  • Susanna Speirs Ali (Art), CSULB's Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award

  • Thomas Douglas (Anthropology), No. 15 in the nation on Rate my Professor’s 2011-12 Highest Rated University Professors list

  • Dr. Masako Douglas (Asian and Asian American Studies), The American Association of Teachers of Japanese Award for excellence in innovative teaching, advocacy and leadership in Japanese education, and service to the profession

  • Dr. Lauren Rauscher (Human Development), CSULB's Distinguished Faculty Advising Award at the University Achievement Awards.

You will find many additional achievements of our faculty throughout this Annual Report. 

Students


Most of all, we are proud of our diverse, talented and determined students who continued to achieve, excel, and do extraordinary things. This Annual Report acknowledges their achievements.  While we can't highlight all of their accomplishments, you will find many of them in each section.   

Long Beach is a special campus because thousands of people have worked to make it the best it can be. We increasingly recognize that student success is everyone’s job, from the president to faculty, to each and every staff member.
