Background

On Friday, March 7, 2008, California State University, Long Beach will hold its Twentieth Annual Student Research Competition. The purpose is to focus attention on the outstanding accomplishments of students engaged in significant research and creative activity at both the graduate and undergraduate levels in all academic disciplines. The vehicle is a student academic conference featuring oral presentations to an audience of fellow students and a jury of distinguished faculty. The best two presentations in each category will win their authors cash prizes ($200 for first place, $100 for second place, generously funded by the President's office), handsome certificates, and an impressive entry for their resumes. The best campus presentations will also be featured on the campus Web pages.

Rules

In order to participate in our local competition, students must be enrolled at CSULB either for the Fall 2007 or Spring 2008 semester and must be nominated by a member of the faculty (see attached Registration Form, which can be photocopied as needed). Written papers should be five double-spaced pages in length, not including references. References and Appendices should not exceed three pages.  A student may submit a paper on any academic topic, provided that that student has not previously submitted the same paper to this competition. Entrants in the Creative Arts and Design category may enter an audio and/or visual record of a performance they have given or work of art they have created, provided they focus their papers and oral presentations on the historical or cultural context and rationale underlying their interpretation of the subject matter involved. In all categories oral presentations of the papers must not exceed 10 minutes, with an additional 5 minutes allowed for questions from jurors and the audience. Supporting audio-visual materials are encouraged in all categories, but please note that equipment needs must then be identified on the registration form, so that the presentation rooms may be properly equipped.

Format

The format, in short, is intended to resemble a professional academic meeting and exactly replicates the setting of the statewide competition. Jurors will evaluate the
  • clarity of purpose in each paper submitted (15%),
  • the appropriateness of the methodology (15%),
  • the interpretation of the results (15%),
  • the value of the research or creative activity (15%),
  • the ability of each presenter to articulate the work involved (15%),
  • the organization of the material presented (15%),
  • and the ability of each presenter to respond to questions from the jury and the general audience (10%).
There is no registration fee for participating in either the campus or statewide competition. Participants in the campus competition will present their papers during the afternoon of Friday, March 7, 2008. An awards dinner for all participants and jurors will follow where certificates will be presented to the winners.

Papers and registration forms (5 copies are required) are due in the Academic Events Office (Academic Services building, room 124) no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2008. Late submissions cannot be accepted. Papers will be grouped for presentation in the following categories, which will also be used in the statewide competition:
