Financial Aid-Federal and State
 
Financial aid and federal loan programs require a financial aid application.
 
To begin the process you need to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The application and a G.P.A. (grade point average) verification form (for Cal Grant applicants only) are available from any college in California. You may submit your FAFSA on line. Eligibility for state and federal financial aid programs will be determined from information provided on this application.

Filing Dates for First Priority: March 1-Deadline (postmark date) for filing the FAFSA and for returning the G.P.A. (grade point average) verification form to the California Student Aid Commission. If you will need financial assistance to pay fall 2008 registration fees, you are encouraged to apply no later than March 1-DO NOT wait until you file your income taxes.

CSU FORGIVABLE LOAN DOCTORAL INCENTIVE PROGRAM

The Forgivable Loan Program provides financial assistance to graduate students. The purpose of the program is to increase the pool of individuals with the qualifications, motivation, and skills to teach the diverse student body in the California State University by providing financial assistance to doctoral students who show promise of becoming strong candidates for CSU instructional faculty positions. It is a competitive program directed by the California State University but open to doctoral students across the country. Through the Forgivable Loan Program, the California State University offers loans and faculty sponsorship to full-time students pursuing doctoral degrees who are interested in a teaching career at a CSU campus. Specifically, the program provides: a loan of up to $10,000 per year up to a total of $30,000 within 5 years; loan forgiveness: twenty percent of the loan is forgiven for each year of full-time postdoctoral teaching at a CSU campus; faculty sponsorship from a CSU faculty member. The California State University is committed to the principle that maintaining the excellence of its faculty requires increasing its diversity. The CSU does not guarantee a faculty position to any participant in the Forgivable Loan Program It is expected, however, that upon completion of their doctoral studies, participants will be qualified to complete for CSU faculty positions. Department of State Internships

A copy of the scannable application for Department of State Internships may be found in the Office of Academic Projects (LIB E-113). Internship objectives are as follows: to encourage students to consider careers in foreign affairs; to provide students with valuable work experience in a foreign affairs agency; and to aid the Department in achieving its mission. Application deadline for fall is March 1 and for spring is July 1.

Ford Foundation

Approximately 60 predoctoral fellowships sponsored by the Ford Foundation and administered by the National Research Council of the National Academies have been made available to U.S. citizens or nationals planning a career in teaching and research at the college or university level. Predoctoral stipend to the fellow will be $20,000 with an institutional allowance of $3,000 for three years. Included is an expense paid attendance at one Conference of Ford Fellows. Application deadline is November 16, 2006.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program
The U. S. Department of education (Office of PostSecondary Education) is inviting applications for the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program which awards fellowships to eligible students of superior ability. Recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise to undertake graduate study leading to a Ph.D. or MFA in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. W.K. Kellogg Foundation Fellowship Program in Health Policy Research

National Medical Fellowships, Inc. is recruiting the second cohort of Fellows for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Fellowship Program in Health Policy Research. The Program is designed to create a cadre of minority health policy researchers trained in the analysis, design, and evaluation of health policy and who can frame research questions addressing issues of health status and access to care. The program awards approximately 10 fellowships to talented minority men and women or non-minorities with a demonstrated commitment to working in underserved areas. Candidates should be accepted into graduate programs in public health, public policy, or social policy leading to the doctorate (Phd, DrPH, or ScD). Application deadline is March 1. Law Enforcement Personnel Dependent Grant-Fees, books, supplies, and monthly allowance

Any dependent of any chief of police, police officer, sheriff, deputy sheriff, marshal, or deputy marshal of the municipal courts or a member of the California Highway Patrol who was killed in the performance of duty or who dies, or is totally disabled as a result of an accident or injury caused by external violence or physical force incurred in the performance of duty, when the death, accident, or injury is compensatible under Worker's Compensation is eligible. NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP)

This program was developed in 1980 to cultivate additional research ties to the academic community and to broaden the base of students pursuing advanced degrees in science and engineering. Fellowships of up to $22,000 are awarded for one year, and are renewable, based on satisfactory progress and available funding, for a total of three years. Program supports approximately 300 graduate students each year. Check eligibility requirements at http://www.education.nasa.gov/gsrp. Students are urged to contact the relevant NASA Program Administrator prior to developing a proposal. Application deadline is February 1.

Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship

Graduate funding to New Americans for up to two years of graduate study.The fellowship provide for $20,000 per year maintenance and half tuition wherever the student attends. Candidates must be either 1) holders of Green Cards (able to show proof of at least one year's IRS submission); 2) naturalized citizens; or 3) children of two naturalized citizen parents. Applicants must be at least 20 years of age and not older than 30 years of age as of November 30, 2000. Graduate students in the third, or subsequent, year of study in the same graduate program are NOT eligible for this competition. President's Commission on White House Fellowships

This program began in 1964 by President L. Johnson. The fellowship enables men and women with demonstrated leadership potential to spend a year working in federal government early in their career. Each year, between 11 and 19 Fellows are selected to serve for one year as full-time, paid assistants to members of the Cabinet and senior White House staff, where they observe federal policy making at the highest levels. Fellows also participate in an education program that includes off-the-record meetings with leaders from all realms of society and travel opportunities to explore U.S. domestic and foreign policy in action. After the fellowship year, it is expected that the Fellows will return to their communities with a better understanding of the federal government and the policy making process. THIRD WAVE Scholarship Program

This program is for young women of color who prioritize social justice and the work done in the spirit of justice and
equality over academic performance, and who integrate social justice into all areas of their lives. ELIGIBILITY: 1. Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an accredited university; 2. Under the age 30; 3. Demonstrate financial need - Primary criterion; 4. Be full-time or part-time; 5. Be involved as activists, artists, or cultural workers working on issues such as racism, homophobia, sexism, or other forms of inequality. APPLICATION PROCESS: 1. Application Form. Jesse M. Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program

There are 18 college graduates selected to become full-time professional staff for 11 months beginning November 2001. The Fellows assist Assembly Members with a broad range of public policy issues. Duties may include legislative research, bill analysis, constituent casework, press release, and speech writing. Fellows will receive 12 graduate units in Government from CSU-Sacramento, for 5-week orientation and weekly academic seminars. There is a $1,882 monthly stipend plus full medical, vision and dental benefits and pays the fees for the 12 graduate units. No previous legislative/political experience is required, but an interest in public policy and politics is essential. Application deadline is March 1.

U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA)-$200 to $7,000

Students with at least one-fourth degree Indian blood and recognized by the Secretary of the Interior as a member of an Indian tribe are eligible. Contact your tribe or tribal agency for an application.

The U. S. Department of Education (OPE) is inviting applications for the Graduate Assistance in AReas of National Need (GAANN) program. GAANN provides fellowships through academic programs and departments of institutions of higher education to assist graduate students with excellent records who demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue the highest degree available in their course of study. General

PHI DELTA GAMMA-$1,000

Currently enrolled graduate students in a Master's program at CSULB who maintain a G.P.A. of at least 3.3 and who participate in voluntary (unpaid) service organizations are eligible. Application consists of a one-page essay in which the applicant describes his/her educational and career goals and objectives and addresses the scholarship criteria. Applicants should also include two letters of recommendation (at least one of which must be from a CSULB faculty member), current transcripts of CSULB graduate coursework, and (on a separate piece of paper) name, address, and phone number. International House Fellowship-$3,000

International Visa students participating in activities related to international education are eligible; must have a minimum 2.75 undergraduate CSULB GPA or 3.25 graduate CSULB GPA; funds must be applied towards residence hall fees. ART

Richard Baker Arts Scholarship-$1,500

Undergraduate or graduate students in a major program within the College of the Arts are eligible; must be enrolled in nine or more units each semester; funds to be used for educational expenses.

John & Flora Olsen Graduate Art Scholarship-Variable

Graduate Art students working toward the MA or MFA degree are eligible; funds to be used for educational expenses. Selection process consists of a portfolio review by the Art Department committee.

Robert W. Sulski Life Drawing-$500

Undergraduate and/or graduate Art students are eligible; portfolio presentation required. Selection based on quality of work; funds to be used for educational expenses.Marilyn Werby Memorial-$2,250

Graduate Art students are eligible; must submit slide portfolios of art work and actual pieces of art work and must participate in a graduate exhibition. Selection is conducted by a faculty committee formed by the Chair of the Art Department in consultation with the donor; funds to be used for educational expenses.

Mary E. Israel Music Scholarship-Variable

Undergraduate and graduate Music students are eligible; funds to be used for educational expenses.

Gerald Strang-$200 to $650

Upper-division or graduate students demonstrating outstanding ability and promise are eligible; funds to be used for educational expenses. Awarded to a composition student during odd years and a string student or pianist during even years.THEATRE

Costume Scholarship-Variable

Second-year graduate or third-year undergraduate Theatre Arts students with an emphasis in technical theatre and costume design interested in pursuing a career in costume are eligible; must be actively studying in-class costume problems and solutions; funds to be used for educational expenses.

James I. Murashige, Jr. Memorial Scholarship-$600-$700

Undergraduate or graduate History majors with a primary interest in California history are eligible; must have a minimum 3.25 GPA and be enrolled as a full-time student.

Summer Research Opportunities

University of Calfornia, San Diego

The intent of these rigorous research-training experiences is to prepare underrepresented minority students to become research scholars and to stimulate serious consideration of graduate study.
