Latest figures from Institutional Research confirm that CSULB’s Highly Valued Degree Initiative (HVDI) is bearing results.
The graduation rate for the freshman cohort that entered six years ago rose 3.3% compared to the prior cohort. This is the largest one-year gain in four years for the campus. About 150 more students completed degrees within six years, compared to the prior year.
On October 24, 2012 the academic colleges and HVDI task forces reported to President Alexander on efforts to support student success. Colleges have focused on improving advising, streamlining curriculum, improving support in high failure rate courses, and improving teaching with high impact pedagogy.
Nationally, the focus on degree completion continues to garner attention. The US, once the world leader, is now far down the listing of degree completion rates among developed nations. President Obama has called for increases in degree completion to strengthen our economic future. Tennessee now bases higher education budgets in good part on degree completions and other states have experimented with similar changes. President Alexander commented on October 24th that CSULB is perhaps three years ahead of many institutions in focusing on student success.
