BAC Services

Services for student-athletes at Long Beach State are provided by the Bickerstaff Academic Center (BAC) for Student-Athletes.

BAC is staffed with full and part-time professional academic counselors and peer advisors who are assigned to academically assist specific teams. The BAC staff is available on a drop-in and appointment basis throughout the calendar year. BAC provides the following services:

Mandatory Advising

Student-athletes are required to meet with their Academic Counselor prior to registration. During their advising appointment, Academic Counselors assist the student-athlete in selecting a schedule of classes that keeps them on track to graduate, as well as eligible according to NCAA policies.

Early Registration

Student-athletes are permitted to have priority registration while selecting classes to avoid conflicts with practice sessions and intercollegiate events.

Coordination of Tutoring and Study Skills Assistance

Student-athletes have the opportunity to utilize a variety of tutoring services. Through the Learning Assistance Center, student-athletes can take part in drop-in, group or one-on-one tutoring.

BAC also provides Survival Skills Workshops to assist freshmen student-athletes in their effort to succeed in the classroom. These workshops cover areas such as note taking approaches, study strategies for exams and time management.

Major/Career Counseling

Decisions you make during college will greatly affect your life. Career Counselors can help you relate educational interests, talents and skills to your major and career goals. Student-athletes can meet with Carol-Brown Elston, Career Counselor, at BAC or in the Career Development Center .

Student-athletes are also encouraged to explore the resources in the Career Development Center including career planning books, user friendly computerized guidance programs, resume writing and interviewing information and career placement.

Life After Athletics

BAC provides assistance and counseling for life after collegiate athletics.  Possible paths include pursuing a graduate degree, obtaining full-time employment within the business world and/or participating in professional sports. To assist with the transition out of the university BAC sponsors an annual Student-Athlete Career Night where student-athletes are encouraged to begin thinking about their career goals and opportunities after completing their degree.
