BAC Programs

Part of the Bickerstaff Academic Center (BAC) for Student-Athlete's mission is to provide programs that help foster personal development and academic success.  BAC coordinates three programs designed specifically for the student-athlete.

HEADS UP! Mentoring Program

Helping Empower Athletes to Developmentally Succeed and Understand Potential! (HEADS UP!) is a program designed to help first-year student-athletes adjust to the demands of both intercollegiate athletics and university academics by hearing first-hand from mentors who have successfully 'survived' their first years at Long Beach State University.

Student-Athlete Success Program

The Student-Athlete Success Program (SASP) provides 49er student-athletes with academic resources and tools necessary to succeed in the collegiate environment with the ultimate goal to assist student athletes to graduation at CSULB.

Faculty/Athlete Connections Program

The Faculty/Athlete Connections program provides second and third year student-athletes with the opportunity of being formally mentored by a distinguished CSULB faculty member.

University 100 Course

University 100 (Univ 100) is a requirement of all freshmen entering CSULB.  It is designed to help students make a successful transition to CSULB by fostering a sense of tradition, community and celebration of diversity, as well as introducing them to the resources and services of the University.  BAC has developed special sections of Univ 100 for student-athletes which focus on real life skills and personal development.  This course also assists student-athletes with meeting daily challenges and enhances their growth in college as both students and athletes.

In addition, BAC collaborates with other campus programs including:

Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC)

SAAC's main purpose is to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and to ensure that the student-athlete voice is heard on campus.  SAAC is comprised of members from all of CSULB's 18 NCAA teams and is led by an Executive Board that is elected by their peers.

The main functions of SAAC:

  • Promote communication between the athletic administration and student-athletes.
  • Provide feedback and insight into athletic department issues.
  • Build a sense of community within the athletic department and all teams.
  • Organize community service efforts.
  • Create a vehicle for student-athlete representation in the University and community.
