The Dean is the chief administrative and academic officer of UCES and reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean is responsible for the strategic direction and management of all initiatives and operations of University College and Extension Services. As a member of the senior management team in Academic Affairs, the Dean works collaboratively with the deans of the seven academic colleges and the Library in the development and innovative delivery of self-support academic programs. The Dean furthers the mission of UCES through advocacy for life-long learning and the development of both credit and non-credit courses and programs. The Dean oversees seventy staff and thirty faculty members. Units reporting to the Dean of UCES include: the American Language Institute, Advanced Media Production, and Mediated Learning Center, and Center for International Trade and Transportation.
A top priority for the Dean will be to lead the collaborative development of a strategic plan for enhanced credit and non-credit offerings as well as community partnerships. A further priority will be to work with campus constituencies and external partners to identify and develop opportunities for new and innovative programs, including on-line offerings. A third and equally important priority will be to expand UCES programs and courses where academically appropriate, and to work collaboratively with faculty, deans, and the Office of the Provost to ensure the high quality of these offerings.
Minimum Qualifications

An earned doctorate or comparable terminal degree from a regionally accredited university;

At least four years' experience and demonstrated effectiveness in leading the development and delivery of market-responsive, self-support extension programs;

Significant experience with technology-mediated teaching and learning;

Demonstrated success in collaborating with academic units in the development and delivery of self-support degree and certificate programs;

Demonstrated success in marketing extension programs in competitive regional and global environments;

Familiarity with the range of existing and emerging technologies and methodologies that support life-long and distance learning;

Experience developing educational programs and services responsive to community and regional needs, both public and private;
-
Ability to work and communicate effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
Preferred Qualifications

Ability to articulate a compelling vision for the future of extended education and technology-mediated learning responsive to the needs of the university's current and future constituencies in support of the university's mission;

Experience in strategic planning that aligns extended education with other academic units;

Experience with submitting and acquiring contracts and grants in support of the mission of UCES;
-
Experience in fostering relationships with donors, alumni, and other constituencies in the interest of fund raising addressing the mission of UCES;
-
Demonstrated commitment to faculty governance, consultative processes, and consensus building;
-
Familiarity with federal regulations and regional accreditation issues related to extended education;
-
Successful experience in a collective bargaining environment.
Primary Duties of the Dean of University College and Extension Services

Advise the Provost of important trends and initiatives in extended education and distance learning at the CSU, in California, and around the nation as they relate to the mission and goals of CSULB.

Assume primary responsibility for the development, revision, and implementation of policies related to fees, salaries, support costs and budget allocations in relation to UCES.

Work closely with deans and program directors in the planning and development of self-support academic programs, including proposals subject to review by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges).

Work closely with faculty and deans to expand education abroad programs and learning opportunities.

Develop and maintain partnerships and collaborations to support the educational needs of community businesses, organizations, and agencies.

Periodically "benchmark" against high performing comparison institutions and use results to improve UCES operations;

Foster the mission of UCES through relations with alumni, donors, and other constituencies.

Manage the fiscal and personnel resources of UCES.

Oversee compliance of UCES-sponsored and administered programs with State, CSU System, and regional accreditation policies related to extended education.

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualification.
