Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to the goals and values of international education and global engagement;
- Appropriate terminal degree, with successful university teaching experience, service, and a record of scholarly/creative activity suitable for a tenured faculty appointment in one of the disciplines of the university;
- Minimum of five years of active involvement in international education initiatives and activities in an academic environment;
- Experience with the objectives and implementation processes involved in internationalizing disciplinary, collegiate, and university-wide curricula;
- Staff and budget management oversight experience;
- Ability to speak and communicate effectively with diverse groups and constituencies, on and off campus, both orally and in writing;
- Ability to work and communicate effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
Preferred Qualifications
- Successful experience in administering international programs, budget, and personnel;
- Successful administrative experience at the level of department chair (or its equivalent) or higher;
- Demonstrated experience in negotiating agreements for educational cooperation with international agencies and universities in other countries;
- Successful experience with external grant and/or contract activity and fundraising;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with various constituencies of the university, the broader community, international agencies, and universities in other countries;
- Ability to communicate in a language or languages other than English.
The AVP for International Education and Global Engagement (AVP/IE) provides vision and leadership for the international mission, internationally-oriented programs, and global engagement of the university as a whole. The AVP/IE works collaboratively with offices and individuals across the university. In conjunction with the Senior Director of the Center for International Education (CIE), the AVP/IE also provides vision and overall direction for the operations of the CIE.
The AVP for International Education and Global Engagement provides vision and major direction for the overall scope, depth, breadth, and expansion of international education for CSULB students on campus and in other countries, and ensures the timely communication of information and ideas regarding international education and programming. The AVP/IE assists colleges and Academic Affairs administration in the planning of CSULB programs offered wholly or in part in other countries, analyzes program proposals in view of university, CSU system, and accreditation requirements, and provides guidance for memoranda of understanding. The AVP/IE explores internationally-oriented collaborative activities and initiatives with external partners in cooperation with Academic Affairs senior management staff, collegiate leadership, interested faculty and students, as well as with the International Education Committee and its subcommittees. The AVP/IE encourages the development and coordination of internationally-oriented curricula and programming on campus.
The Senior Director of the CIE and the Coordinator of International Programs, Events and Scholarships report to the AVP/IE. The CIE has a staff of 15. The Assistant Vice President for International Programs and Global Engagement is a member of the Senior Staff in the Division of Academic Affairs and reports to the Provost.
Duties
- Advance the international mission and global engagement of the university;
- Recommend policies to the university administration as they relate to advancing the international mission and global engagement of the institution; negotiate educational agreements and create strategic linkages with international universities;
- Serve as liaison with local, state, national, and international organizations for the purpose of promoting the university's international reputation and global engagement; serve as liaison with internationally-focused campus centers and institutes;
- In conjunction with the CIE Senior Director, provide leadership and direction for the Center for International Education;
- Work closely with faculty, deans, and the Center for Faculty Professional Development to facilitate
interdisciplinary and cross-college collaborations in global learning;
- Develop and facilitate significant growth in study abroad opportunities for CSULB students around the world (e.g. London Semester Program, Summer in Spain Program etc.); provide leadership to faculty and deans in the creation of short-term study abroad programs and international initiatives; assist colleges and Academic Affairs administration in the planning and development of CSULB degree programs offered wholly or in part in other countries; assist faculty in identifying and obtaining international teaching and research opportunities abroad;
- Provide leadership for external grant and contract applications, including those related to multi-divisional, multi-college international initiatives, in collaboration with the Office of Research and External Support and with deans and senior management in the Division of Academic Affairs, as well as with the International Education Committee and its subcommittees.
- Serve as the university’s Chief Protocol Officer for international visitors as well as for representatives of government, professional, and community organizations in activities related to international education and global engagement;
- Serve on various university-wide committees and councils (including ad hoc groups), as well as on extra-university groups, for the purpose of representing the interests of international education, and promoting the international ethos of the university;
- Encourage, develop, and oversee special events of an international nature that promote international awareness and global engagement at CSULB (e.g. International Week Celebration, lectures, panel discussions and film series on international topics; Fulbright scholars and activities; Phi Beta Delta programs and events);
- Serve as coordinator for Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Delta, the Society for International Scholars.
