Minimum Qualifications
- An earned doctorate from an accredited institution that satisfies eligibility for appointment to the rank of tenured full professor in one of the academic departments in the College of Liberal Arts
- Successful academic administrative experience at the level of department chair or above, including management of fiscal and personnel resources, academic program evaluation and review, enrollment, and programs for student advisement, recruitment, and retention
- An exemplary record of university teaching; research, scholarly and creative activity; and service
- Demonstrated commitment to faculty governance, consultative processes, and consensus building
- Ability to provide ethical leadership to the college
- Ability to interact effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community
- Ability to articulate, and demonstrate commitment to, the value of a liberal arts education
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to articulate a vision for the future of humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary curricula and research in a teaching-intensive, research-driven comprehensive university
- Ability to work and communicate effectively and collaboratively with CLA faculty, staff and leadership and as a member of the Academic Affairs leadership team, ensuring timely and effective two-way communication and feedback on all matters pertaining to policies affecting the College's mission, organization, vision, and functioning
- Experience in and commitment to leadership development—especially with respect to department chairs and program directors—for the advancement of educational policy that contributes to student success
- Experience in fostering relationships with donors, alumni, and other constituencies in the interest of fund-raising
- Experience with and commitment to K-16 outreach and collaboration, community partnerships, and service learning
- Experience with and commitment to international education along with an ability to find synergies with the international connections of expatriate and immigrant communities
- Demonstrated leadership in promoting excellence in both teaching and research including support for faculty development, mentoring and the tenure and promotion process
- Ability to provide oversight for budget planning and management
- Experience with and commitment to strategic planning
- Demonstrated commitment to increase the number of tenured/tenure-track (T/TT) faculty in the disciplines of the College
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting excellence in undergraduate and graduate education
- Demonstrated record of encouraging and facilitating faculty pursuit of grants and contracts
- Commitment to good-faith application of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
- Demonstrated record of working to ensure effective faculty recruitment and retention practices, including equal opportunity and diversity in hiring
Responsibilities
The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts is the chief academic officer of the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) and reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean exercises ethical leadership, vision, innovative and strategic thinking in academic planning, faculty recruitment and performance assessment, research, scholarly and creative activity development, and program review.
The Dean advocates on behalf of the College and its programs and provides effective communication and feedback to both CLA faculty and staff and the administration regarding issues related to the functioning of the College. The Dean also supports faculty governance and encourages innovation in both academic and administrative areas of the College. The Dean leads the College staff and department chairs in managing the College's fiscal resources and personnel, recruiting, evaluating and retaining a well-qualified faculty and staff, and developing effective student recruitment and retention programs in the College. The Dean also leads department chairs and faculty in fundraising efforts to support the College's academic programs, research, performance, and exhibition activities.
