Description**

California State University, Long Beach invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Provost reports to the President and, as directed, will represent the University within the California State University system and other public and private sectors. The Senior Vice President works collaboratively with the Vice Presidents for Finance, Student Services, and Development.

The successful candidate will possess an earned doctorate or an appropriate terminal degree, be qualified to hold the rank of full professor and be able to demonstrate a commitment to shared governance. In addition to possessing a strong record of progressively responsible administrative experience, he/she will:

  • Provide leadership in implementing the University’s mission and vision, which includes fulfilling its core purpose to “provide highly-valued undergraduate and graduate educational opportunities through superior teaching, research, creative activity, and service.”
  • Lead the Division of Academic Affairs by continuously strengthening an academic environment that is supportive of student success.
  • Oversee instructional and curricular programs; academic planning; and the development of educational policy.
  • Encourage and facilitate faculty professional development, research, creative activity, and externally funded grants and resources that sustain scholarship.
  • Provide leadership to enhance private philanthropic support for academic initiatives. The Provost will take an active role in supporting the upcoming comprehensive campaign.
  • Develop and manage the budget ($140 million) and resources of the Division.
  • Oversee personnel and employee relation functions within the Division.
  • Provide administrative oversight of the managerial structures of the Division.
  • Provide leadership experience in consulting with faculty through established consultative bodies.
  • Participate in the University’s enrollment management planning.
  • Encourage and facilitate service to the University, community engagement, service learning, and international education.
  • Preserve the campus commitment to diversity, civility, and justice; and foster positive and cooperative working relationships with all areas of the campus community.

Appointment is effective April 1, 2010, or at a later negotiated date.
