California State University, Long Beach invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Health and Human Services. We seek an experienced, creative, and inspiring leader who will articulate a compelling vision for the College that builds upon its reputation for academic excellence, outstanding professional preparation, innovative service outreach, and strong community partnerships.
One of eight colleges at CSULB, the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) employs 452 full and part-time faculty, over 63 staff, and includes the departments of Communicative Disorders, Criminal Justice, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health Science, Kinesiology, Professional Studies, Physical Therapy, Public Policy and Administration, Recreation and Leisure Studies, Social Work, and the School of Nursing as well as a number of programs and centers. The College of Health and Human Services maintains 15 separate accreditations and 9 licensure programs. CHHS serves over 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students each year, with over 2,200 baccalaureate and graduate degrees conferred annually.
Include an earned doctorate from an accredited institution and a strong academic record in teaching and scholarship that merits appointment as full Professor in one of the college's departments; at least three years of demonstrated success in administrative leadership and rising levels of responsibility at the level of department chair or above; collaborative management style and demonstrated success in engaging diverse constituent groups in strategic initiatives and academic planning; successful experience with accreditation; effective fiscal management.
Preference will be given to candidates who have a dynamic educational vision that is forward-looking and inclusive, superior interpersonal and communication skills, and a strong record of accomplishments that includes innovative program building that meets societal needs; significant experience facilitating partnerships with local and state agencies and non-profits; extensive knowledge of national accreditation processes and standards; demonstrated ability to engage local and state leaders on significant matters of public policy, safety, and health issues; and demonstrated success with external funding and other fundraising activities.
The Dean reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean is expected to exercise leadership, vision, and strategic thinking in academic planning, faculty recruitment and performance assessment, research and scholarly activity development, program review, and in all aspects of accreditation. S/he will be expected to lead department chairs and the faculty in fundraising efforts to support the College's academic programs, research activities, and student scholarships. The Dean is responsible for managing the college's fiscal resources and personnel, for recruiting, evaluating, and retaining a well-qualified faculty and staff, and for developing effective student recruitment and retention programs in the College.
