MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The Department of Biological Sciences at California State University, Long Beach seeks applications for the position of a 12- month Chair of the Department to lead a research-oriented teaching faculty of diverse scientific interests. A Ph.D. or equivalent in a biological discipline is required. The successful candidate will have administrative experience that demonstrates the capacity to serve effectively as a Chair. The Department seeks a candidate with an exemplary record of teaching, research, grantsmanship, and service that would allow appointment to the position of Chair at the rank of Professor with tenure. Chairs are appointed for 3-year terms; renewable upon favorable review. The successful candidate must have the ability to communicate and work effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Chair who can effectively lead a diverse faculty in ecology & evolution, marine biology, microbiology, molecular-cell biology, and physiology. A demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding for program development. Administrative experience as a Chair.
DUTIES: Broadly promote and advocate department academic programs; promote faculty research; support development of graduate programs; work with department faculty and college administration in implementation of a new science building; effectively manage department budgets; administer faculty and staff; perform faculty and staff evaluations; lead recruitment and hiring of new faculty; participate in department long-range planning; and seek extramural funding for program development.
SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
