CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, LONG BEACH DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY Tenure-track Faculty Opening RECRUITMENT : 056POSITION: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, tenure-track with area of specialization/competence (AOS/AOC) in Ethics, Applied Ethics, and Political Philosophy. Candidate must be willing to direct the department’s Applied Ethics Center .

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A.B.D. in Philosophy (Ph.D. in Philosophy at time of appointment is required). Applicants must present evidence of (1) teaching effectiveness, (2) potential and/or documented scholarship leading to publications and paper presentations at major conferences, (3) potential for service to the department, college, university, and community, (4) ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community, (5) AOS/AOC in Ethics, Applied Ethics, and Political Philosophy
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: College or university teaching experience. Published scholarship and/or paper presentations in AOS at major conferences.
DUTIES: Teach upper division and graduate (M.A.) courses in AOS and lower-division general education courses. Flexible teaching schedule is possible and assigned time opportunities for research and curriculum development are available. Summer school and winter session teaching available. Must be willing to develop new courses in areas of specialization, including courses meeting general education requirements. Must engage in agenda of research leading to publication. Student advising. Department and university service.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION: Letter of application explicitly addressing qualifications (both minimum and preferred); curriculum vitae; three recent letters of recommendation; official transcript from institution awarding highest degree. AOS should be clearly and explicitly demonstrated in the application materials in one or more of the following ways: (1) significant teaching of courses, (2) development of new courses, (3) scholarly publication, (4) professional activity, including professional society memberships and conference participation, (5) doctoral dissertation, (6) receipt and/or administration of grants/fellowships. Materials submitted cannot be returned. (Employment is contingent upon proof of the legal right to work in the United States. This proof must be provided at the time of employment at the university. An appointment is not final until proof is provided.)
POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED (OR RECRUITMENT CANCELED): Review of applications to begin November 1, 2005. Interviews at APA-Eastern Meetings, December 2005. On-campus finalist interviews in January 2006.
SALARY RANGE: Depends on training and experience. Probable salary range is $53,000 to $70,000.
