Glossary of CSULB Terms and Acronyms

CSULB has its own vocabulary. The following list defines the most commonly used terms and acronyms.

THE CONTRACT The Memorandum of Understanding that sets out the agreement between the CSU Board of Trustees and the California Faculty Association. Wages, hours of employment, and terms and conditions of employment are reported.

CSLC Community Service Learning Center

CTA California Teachers Association. Represents K-14 teachers and faculty.

EES

Educational Equity Services. There are two primary services in EES:
1. Educational Oppurtunity Program (EOP)
2. Student Support Services Program (SSSP)

ELM Entry-Level Mathematics Test, taken by new undergraduates if their math SAT scores were below 550.
EPC Educational Policies Council. A standing committee of the Academic Senate responsible for curriculum and program review and policies.
EPT English Placement Test. Exam taken by new undergraduates if their verbal SAT scores were below 550
FERP Faculty Early Retirement Program
FPPC Faculty Personnel Policy Committee. This is a Standing Committee of the Academic Senate that examines policies affecting personnel.
FTES Full-time equivalent student
FTEF Full-time equivalent faculty
GE General Education Requirements (A minimum of 51 units of GE classes must be completed for a baccalaureate degree at CSULB).
GSI General Salary Increase. Across-the-board, or cost-of-living (COLA) increase.
GTAs Graduate Teaching Assistants. They are not in Bargaining Unit 3. They are graduate students who teach classes in their fields of interest, often required as part of their course study.
GWAR Graduate Writing Requirement Assessment. The CSU mandates that all students must demonstrate writing proficiency in order to graduate. At CSULB, the GWAR is the WPE (see below).
IVR Interactive Voice Response. It is a campus telephone system for student self-service options.
LECTURER Term used for both full-time temporary and part-time temporary faculty in the CSU.
LAC Learning Assistance Center. This center provides additional help to all university students for any aspect of their studies.

MOU Memorandum of Understanding
PAF Personnel Action File.
PERB Public Employment Relations Board. This is a quasi-judicial administrative agency charged with administering the collective bargaining statutes covering employees of California's public schools, colleges, and universities.
PPM Physical Plant Management.
PRAP Council Program Review Academic Planning Council.
PRTB Pre-retirement Reduction in Time-Base.
RTP Retention, Tenure, and Promotion. Personnel review procedures for all fulltime tenure track faculty.
SABBATICAL A leave of absence with full or partial pay, depending on the length of the leave, to pursue research or writing activities.

SCAC Scholarly and Creative Activities Committee
SFR Student Faculty Ratio
SOAR Student Orientation, Advising and Registration. A program that provides new students various services to help them register for classes and get acclimated to the campus.
SSI Salary Step Increase.
STARS Student Transition and Retention Services. It is a part of the SOAR Program
TOEFL Test of English as a Foreign Language. A qualifying exam taken by students whose prior education was not principally in English.

UNIT 3
Bargaining unit for CSU Faculty, librarians, counselors and coaches. CFA is the
exclusive bargaining representative for Unit 3.
USU University Student Union
WRC Women's Resource Center
WRL Writers Resource Lab. The lab provides individual tutoring assistance for all university students to help them develop as writers.
WTU Weighted teaching units. A full time faculty load is 12 units of coursework and 3 units of advising and service.
