Lecturer Evaluation

All Lecturers (full-time and part-time temporary faculty) whose appointments are for two or more semesters must be given a formal written evaluation, called a Periodic Evaluation. Lecturers appointed for one semester may request an evaluation. Lecturers holding three-year appointments must be evaluated once during the three-year term (normally in year two of the appointment) and may be evaluated more frequently upon request of the appropriate admininstrator or the lecturer. These evaluations become part of each Lecturer's permanent personnel file.

Periodic Evaluation
Each fall the Associate Vice President for Academic Personnel sends a letter to Deans and Chairs on "Evaluation of Lecturers and Temporary Librarian Faculty." This letter reviews periodic evaluation policies and sets deadlines. The letter and the periodic evaluation form are available electronically at http://www.csulb.edu/aa/personnel and click on "Lecturers."

Range Elevation
Lecturers who have no more Service Salary Step Increase (SSI) eligibility in their current salary range and have five or more years in their current range have the right to seek Range Elevation.

Range elevation refers to an increase in salary by movement on the salary schedule from one range to the next, e.g. "A" range to "B" range or "B" range to "C" range.  By November 1st of each year, Academic Affairs will send to the departments a list of Lecturers eligible for range elevation and information on eligibility, procedures, and evaluation timetable.  Lecturers who are eligible for elevation will be individually notified.  If you believe that you are eligible and have not been notified, contact Donna Johnson in Academic Affairs at 5-7667 or donnarae@csulb.edu.  Each eligible Lecturer is to be considered/evaluated for range elevation unless he/she notifies the department chair in writing that he/she does not wish to be considered at this time.   There is an appeal procedure for those denied a range elevation.

The current CSU-CFA Collective Bargaining Agreement requires campuses to establish range elevation policies.  See Article 12.16- 12.21 (http://www.calfac.org/).

The CSULB Academic Senate has established the campus range elevation policy. The Policy Statement (02-03) is available electronically http://www.csulb.edu/divisions/aa/grad_undergrad/senate/documents/policy/2002/03

2. The Collective Bargaining Agreement stipulates only that student evaluations of teaching be considered in the periodic evaluation of Lecturers. Lecturers may, if they wish, submit a comprehensive evaluation file to be considered in their periodic evaluation. Suggestions for the comprehensive evaluation file are listed below.

Note: Range Elevation is a separate process from the Lecturer Periodic Evaluation. However, the Academic Senate Range Elevation Policy gives examples of activities that you might wish to include in your comprehensive evaluation file.
