California State University, Long Beach enrolls approximately 1,500 International students from 101 foreign countries each academic year. In addition, some 300 CSULB students take advantage of both short-term and year-long study abroad opportunities around the world. Students are encouraged to select a major which will prepare them to be engaged in a global society. The campus offers a variety of majors from all of its seven Colleges which support such a goal. Cal State Long Beach is proud to be the only campus in the CSU with a major in International Studies, and the university's International House--where both international and U.S. students reside--is one of only two such residential halls established at the California State University system's 23 campuses. Through faculty incentive awards, more than a hundred courses campus-wide have been "internationalized" over the last several years. In addition to curriculum development, faculty are encouraged to become involved in a range of international activities which include committee work and short-term, faculty-led study, internship, and community service abroad. For more information on faculty and staff opportunities, click here. In addition, as part of the General Education requirements for the bachelor's degree, all CSULB undergraduate students must take at least one course with "global" content. To encourage CSULB students to engage in at least one study abroad experience and take courses with international content, a learning community of freshman students was formed eight-years-ago--called the Global Learning Options for a Broader Education Program (GLOBE). Students in this program take first-year courses as a cohort with new international freshman students. For these reasons as well as its high quality student learning and faculty resource environment, CSULB takes pride in being an "International Education University of Choice."
