Students who do not receive a score of 11 or higher on their first WPE attempt satisfy the GWAR by successfully completing assessments connected with approved GWAR courses. Students who receive a score of 8, 9 or 10 must successfully complete one of the GWAR portfolio courses listed below and submit a passing portfolio to complete the GWAR. Students who receive 7 or lower on their first WPE attempt must complete ENGL 301A with a grade of C or better before enrolling in a portfolio course and submitting a passing portfolio to complete the GWAR. Writing in the Arts (COTA 300) is a multi-disciplinary elective for students who are majors in the College of Arts with junior standing. A permit from the Department of Art undergraduate advisor is required for registration. Contact Duan Jackson at Duan.Jackson@csulb.edu for a permit. Course activities include analysis of and practice in writing for and about the arts, including the visual arts, dance, design, film, music and theatre. Instruction focuses on exploration of critical thought in the arts while practicing writing skills. Students should contact their major advisor for more information about this course.

English Proficiency (ENGL 301B) is an intermediate course in English usage with emphasis on building proficiency in oral and written language. ENGL 301B may be repeated for a maximum of 6 units. Credit for ENGL 301B is not applicable to any degree program of the Department of English. International students should contact the Center for International Education for registration instructions. Returning students who need the GWAR to graduate should contact a GWAR advisor for permits and registration instructions.

Business Communications in Engineering Profession (ENGR 310) focuses on basic concepts for the understanding and practice of communication in the world of business for managers and professional engineers. Topics include language/conversation in business and its role in coordinating actions, resolving breakdowns in work, and customer satisfaction, as well as business writing formats; formal reports; business conversation; and international, technical, and linguistic developments in business communication. It is an upper-division GE course that satisfies the Global Issues requirement. Methodology of History (HIST 301) is required of all History majors in their first semester of upper-division work. The course includes an introduction to historiography and methodological issues, skills and competencies exercises, research methods, research presentations, and peer review, as well as creation of a student portfolio that is used in the remaining upper-division courses in the major and assessed in HIST 499.
