After attempting the WPE once, students may satisfy the GWAR by successfully completing assessments connected with approved GWAR courses. Currently, the following GWAR courses are offered:

Writing in the Arts (COTA 300) is a multi-disciplinary elective for students who are majors in the College of Arts with junior standing and have instructor consent. A permit is required for registration. Seniors with WPE scores of 10 are given priority enrollment. Course activities include analysis of and practice in writing for and about the arts, including the visual arts, dance, design, film, music and theatre. Instruction focuses on exploration of critical thought in the arts while practicing writing skills. Students should contact their major advisor for more information about this course.

Prerequisites: ENGL 100 or equivalent
English Proficiency (ENGL 301B) is an intermediate course in English usage with emphasis on building proficiency in oral and written language. Enrollment is limited to upper-division students needing language development beyond skills acquired in ENGL 100 who have scores of 9 or 10 on the WPE. Seniors and graduate students are given priority enrollment. ENGL 301B may be repeated for a maximum of 6 units. Credit for ENGL 301B is not applicable to any degree program of the Department of English. Students should contact the English Department for more information about this course.

Business Communications in Engineering Profession (ENGR 310) is a required course for Engineering majors that focuses on basic concepts for the understanding and practice of communication in the world of business for managers and professionals. Topics include language/conversation in business and its role in coordinating actions, resolving breakdowns in work, and customer satisfaction, as well as business writing formats; formal reports; business conversation; and international, technical, and linguistic developments in business communication. Cultural Perspectives of Dress is a well-established, writing-intensive course offered by the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. It is an upper-division GE course that satisfies the Global Issues requirement.

Methodology of History (HIST 301) is required of all History majors in their first semester of upper-division work. The course includes an introduction to historiography and methodological issues, skills and competencies exercises, research methods, research presentations, and peer review, as well as creation of a student portfolio that is used in the remaining upper-division courses in the major and assessed in HIST 499 4 units. HIST 301 may be repeated to a maximum of 8 units. Students should contact their major advisor for more information about this course.

Business Communications Laboratory (IS 301L) is a writing-intensive elective for undergraduate business majors who need assistance with English writing skills. The laboratory provides intensive practice in English usage and mechanics in written business communications. IS 301L must be taken concurrently with IS 301 (or within two calendar years of completing IS 301 with a C or higher).
