What
Is University 100 (UNIV100)?
Created
in 1981, University 100: The University & Your Future
is a first-year experience course designed to introduce our new
students to the history and traditions of the university, to current
issues in higher education, to concepts such as academic freedom,
faculty tenure, and student rights and responsibilities, and to
academic services available to them at CSULB (such as the Career
Development Center, the Learning Assistance Center, and the Writer's Resource
Lab). The course also introduces students to our University
Library and to other campus information technologies.
Our
one-unit (fifteen-hour) academic course is graded on a Credit/No
Credit (CR/NC) basis only. Due to the compact nature of the course,
attendance is mandatory.
Who
Must Take UNIV100?
All
incoming freshmen or lower-division transfer students are required
to complete our course within their first two full-time semesters on
campus. Advanced Placement units do not exempt students from this
requirement. (Lower-division transfer students are encouraged to contact our office in advance of his/her first semester at CSULB
for evaluation regarding the UNIV100 requirement, especially
if an equivalent course has already been taken at another institution.)
When
Is UNIV100 Offered?
First-time students register for UNIV100 when attending either a SOAR workshop or an Academic Advising Center (AAC) session. It is recommended that students make their UNIV100 format preferences known to SOAR/AAC advisors when registering.
The following upcoming courses are offered in a variety
of formats in order to accommodate students with challenging class
and work schedules:
Fall 2008 Presemester Intensive: Courses meet the week of August 25-29 (M-F) only in daily three-hour sessions. Though this course takes place entirely the week before the regular semester, it is technically considered to be a fall course. (Please be advised that on-campus housing may not be available during the presemester week.)
Fall 2008 Bridge: Courses meet for three hours daily during presemester, August 25-27 (M-W), and then for 1.5 hours weekly the second, fourth, sixth, and eighth Saturdays of the regular fall semester. (Please be advised that on-campus housing may not be available during the presemester week.)
Fall 2008 Regular Semester: Courses meet weekly the first five weeks (at three hours per class meeting) or the first ten weeks (at 1.5 hours per class meeting) of the regular fall semester.
Please
consult the current Schedule of Classes for information
regarding the specific dates, times, and locations of our courses.
Who
Teaches UNIV100?
A
variety of CSULB faculty and staff—chosen by the Director
of the University 100 Program for their excellence in teaching and for their
expertise in relating to new students—lead the classroom component
of the course, which is worth two-thirds of a student's final UNIV100
course grade. A University librarian assists in creation of a self-directed,
online library component to
be completed by the student outside of class meeting times; this portion is worth the remaining
one-third of the course grade.
