SUBJECT: CHANGING GENERAL EDUCATION CATEGORY IV

The following policy statement, recommended by the Academic Senate at its meeting of November 3, 1977, and approved by the President on November 18, 1977, is as follows:

CHANGE IN GENERAL EDUCATION CATEGORY IV

(a) Amend the Bulletin statement of General Education Category IV, by deleting the sections marked and adding the under lined sections.

IV. Basic Communication --Two or more courses (totaling six or more units) in English composition, foreign language (other than literature courses), journalism, mathematics, radio-television, speech communication, or, course in statistics or computer language and applications selected from an approved list. No course meeting the requirement of any other General Education category may be used to meet this requirement.

(b) Add a new policy statement:

Courses in statistics and computer language and application will count for General Education credit in Category IV if they have been individually approved by the Planning and Educational Policies Council for that purpose. The Council will consult appropriate faculty groups in arriving at a decision.
