Call to Order Meeting called to order, 2:05 pm II. Approval of Agenda Agenda approved III. Welcome and Introductions Chairs Report: Andy welcomed the committee and apologized for late start on this semester. He reported that he had met with Vic to discuss the charge of the committee and was in process of guaranteeing that all pertinent issues would be dealt with during COA meetings during 08-09 school year. IV. Elect Scribe After no one volunteered to be the scribe for the group, Vic volunteered the time of his assistant, Heather, for our COA meetings. Thank you, Vic and Heather! V. Reports A. Vic Cegles, Athletic Director Welcome to committee, appreciate your participation. Truly interested in getting the inter-campus and external communities involved in out Athletic Department. There are over 300 student/athletes (SA) and one of our main goals is to graduate these SAs. Gayle Fenton and staff of Bickerstaff Center are here to assist greatly in that goal. Last year talked about ways to involve more faculty and staff in Athletic events, and still am hoping to find ways to do so. Willing to do Brown Bag lunches/events in order to meet and discuss with faculty/staff. A lot to recently be proud of: 9 medalists at Beijing Olympics are from CSULB and numerous coaches. Announcement: 10/24 is reunion of 1998 championship Womens Volleyball team, including Misty May-Treanor. Had a great spring with numerous championships and final appearances. Our primary philosophy is Student Development in Athletics. Sharon Taylornoted how important it is for the campus community to be aware of all the times the SAs must put in for their scholarships. VCFor many sports, students are not getting money, and there are many shared awards. Many SAs are working in addition to practice and competition time. Alan SaferWhy cant faculty get into events for free? VCWe could look at it, but want to create culture of faculty aiding in generating revenues. ASIs there a faculty booster club? VCThere was too much competition between different booster clubs, so they all became part of one central group, the 49ER Athletic Club. This was in order to maximize gifts. Likes the concept of faculty group; could possibly fit into 49ER AC. STAre there specific faculty/staff nights? VCThere are all sorts of events involving different faculty/staff throughout year. Brenda Vogelnoted that there is the Academic All-Star Game where SAs can invite a Most Valuable Professor to be recognized. Gayle Fentonnoted that last year about 350 faculty were invited, but only about 20 attended. Announcement: Academic All-Star game is February 26, 2009. There is a reception prior to the Mens Basketball game that evening, and All-Star salute at halftime. B. Special AdmitsBrenda Vogel HOSpecial Admit Process & Success Rate (on file) Brenda reviewed the Handout that explains the process for Special Admits into the university. Often times these students are not just under-achievers, but they are victims of poor counseling or even have learning disabilities. This process allows departments and Athletics to admit students who meet CSU eligibility, but do not meet the CSULB criteria. Students who are not CSU eligible are referred to as special-special admits (SSA). Brenda is the Chair of DAAC, the Department of Athletics Academic Committee, consisting of 3 faculty and 2 Athletic Dept. members. DAACs recommendations go to Tom Enders, AVP of Enrollment Services. Appeals to decisions of non-admittance granted by the Athletic Director would go to DARC, the Director of Athletics Review Committee. Stan OlinWho makes up DARC? BVVic, Tom Enders, and David Dowell, Vice Provost for Planning & Budgets, and Director of Strategic Planning VCI talk to the coach and look at his/her graduation success for SAs. I also talk to Gayle regarding tutoring issues. David ShaferWhat is the number of SSAs this year? BVLarger than last Mary Ann TripodiOftentimes the coach decides not to appeal due to their personal case history. VCIf you look at our Academic Progress Rate (APR), we were the only CSU to be above .925 in graduation rates (only UCLA and Cal were better). Alan SaferWhat about long-term success? BVWe have not received those numbers yet. Gayle Fentonhas asked for assistance from Enrollment Services for these numbers, but has not received them yet. Lynda McCroskeyDo remedial courses count? GFThey count towards the 27 units needed to be completed in a year, but not towards graduation. Sometimes transfer students can be behind in certain areas, as well as incoming freshman. Stan OlinDo we take as many SSAs as we are allowed? BVWe never hit the top allowed number. C. Athletic Budget ReportRandy Langejans HOFinancial Summary 09, Revenue Summary 09 (on file) The handout reviews the proposed budget for fiscal year 08/09. RL went through the handouts and explained details concerning both revenues and expenses. VC40-60% of needed support we raise for Athletics. Norma KolbHow did Jewels of the Night (large fundraiser in Spring 2008) do? RLabout the same as usual. VCOur goal is to net $150,000 from that event. Alan SaferAre they doing ticket sales from the store on 2nd Street in Belmont Shore? RLnot sure if they got the terminal set up to do ticket sales. VCThe store is a great opportunity to market in the community. Has had a slow start: not sure system got set up, switched apparel from Adidas to Nike. CBS Interactive now doing online store. RL can return in spring to review RPP (Resource Planning Process) for 09/10. VI. Other Business Gayle FentonBickerstaff Center falls under eye of Academic Affairs. Would like to present regarding their role in Athletics. VCNCAA certification coming up. Tom KeltyCan we somehow get information from the faculty regarding how they are interested in being involved in Athletics? Can the Deans and Associate Deans be of help with the departments? VII. Future Agenda Items Next meeting will be November 19 at 3:30 pm in Bickerstaff Center, PE 67. Adjourned at 3:15 pm.
