Chairs Report Reviewed date of upcoming COA meetings April 28 (2 pm) Reminded group that we will need to elect a new Chair for the 2009-10 Academic year. IV. Athletic Directors ReportVic Cegles (VC) Beach Legacy Referendum (BLR) did not pass. VC acknowledged the coaches, staff, Wayne Stickney and David Benedict, and student athletes (SA) for their assistance and work. Working on BLR brought many group together. Cal Poly SLO did pass their similar referendum. President Alexander still has right to review results. Alan Safer (AS)could you have changed your approach at all? VCNo. Timing was not necessarily an issue. Its tough to leave an issue like this to the students. Norma Kolb (NK)Pres. Alexander can reverse the results? VCThis result is an advisory to the President. Sharon Taylor (ST)The executive order is that the President will get an advisory from the community on the issue. Team and Athletics updateBaseball is young, be patient! Good softball team, volleyball doing well. Womens Basketball coach Mary Hegartys contract has not been renewed and we are currently searching for a new coach. Mary Ann Tripodi (MAT)Currently doing exit interviews with senior SAs. Rita Hayes (RH)Nicole Vargas (Womens Volleyball) was named to USA National Team. Gayle Fenton (GF)Will there be a report on the exit interviews? VCI will let you know. V. Compliance ReportMary Ann Tripodi (MAT) Handout #1Long Beach State Federal Graduation Rates MATCurrently working on the 02/03 Cohort. ASHow do we compare, say to CSU Fullerton? MATUnsure. You could go on-line to see. My guess is wed be higher. In relation to Graduation Success Rate (GSR)Freshmen and transfers With transfers it is more difficult to calculate; its based upon the number units they have upon arrival at CSULB. Brenda Vogel (BV)The only difference between the top and section and the bottom section is that the bottom section includes data for transfers? MATYes. Handout #2Academic Progress Rate (APR) Institutional Report, 2007-08 (Academic Progress Rate: NCAA began tracking in 2003, to track eligibility and retention of student athletes (SA). There seemed to be an issue of students leaving with coach changes. This system puts a point system to different factors relating to retention.) MATThis is based upon all athletic aid. Handout #3 & #4Sample Team APR calculation (#3) and APR up to 2007-08 (#4) MAT-- Each SA on athletic aid has to be tracked. Displays eligibility and retention of each athlete. We get a point if they stay eligible and if they return to compete. Elig. column factorsunits taken, GPA, units towards degree, cumulative CSULB GPA, must pass 24 units as frosh, 18 units/yr later. Must have 40% of their degree done by start of 3rd year, 20% of degree each school year. Divide points earned by pts possible and you get your APR rate. 38/40 gives 950 APR. You get multi-year rate after 4 years. Must be 925 or above. We are above 925 in all sports. Next year, they drop 04/05. They just look at last 4 years for multi-year rate. If they leave eligible, we dont lose a point. Anybody that leaves during cycle but returns to graduate, you get a delayed graduation point. The multi-year rate is what is public. Only CSULB, Cal, and UCLA had all teams above 925 in the state of CA. STWhy are the average of the multi-year rates not the representative multi-year rate? MATDoes not include bonus points. GF helps a lot by tracking those who leave the university and by trying to get them to come back and finish degrees. STWhy does baseball have to get 25% scholarships? VCIf someone transfers, they have to sit out a year. In other sports, they can immediately jump in and compete. The 25% is an attempt to make it fair. Sharon Guthrie (SG)Does the NCAA check work? MATYes. We were audited last year. Each school gets audited, and then the cycle begins again. Other BusinessSample Compliance Quiz given to coaches from MAT (HO #5) MAT gave the committee a sample of a quiz on compliance issues that she randomly will give to coaches. VI.
