CSULB Assessment Coordinator Report
November 2002

These are the major objectives and tasks accomplished during Fall 2002.

*Established New Assessment Office
1.  Moved into new office in the Faculty Center for Professional Development suite, Library 5th floor, Office 508A. Obtained new telephone number (985-7094) and computer with Internet and printer access.

2.  Hired student assistant, Melissa Findlay, one of the President's Scholars, and senior majoring in history and education.

3.  Went through all old files and set up new filing system, including:
-Lists of all applications for assessment grants, and copies of applications;
-Lists of all assessment grant project awards, with copies of applications;
-Lists of all assessment travel awards, with copies of applications;
-Lists of all final reports received, with copies of reports;
-Lists of all travel and assessment grant proposals denied;

4.  Drew up plans for revising the assessment web page with Chair of Assessment Committee, Laura Henriques, to make more assessment project proposals and final reports accessible by department and college.

5.  Organized Assessment Resources and created an Inventory of all items.

*Increase Accountability for Project Grants
6.  Organized the assessment seminar for Fall 2002 for all persons and teams awarded an assessment grant for the 2002-2003 academic year.
-Held beginning of semester seminar for all recipients;
-Scheduled end of semester seminar for all recipients;
-Provided individual counseling as requested.
-Began follow-up with all previous projects lacking final reports.

7.  Organized data from Spring 2002 Assessment Committee survey of departments and majors concerning 2002-2003 accountability goals and program review experiences.
-Presented data at Fall 2002 Dean's Retreat; typed up notes for K. Cohn
-Wrote summary for the Fall 2002 Accountability Report
-Presented data to University Graduate Council and Assessment Committee
-Organized findings into files by department and major
-Sent hard copies of departmental responses to Dean of each college

*Improve College Outreach
8.  Developed two workshops geared for Colleges and Departments on how to do assessment at the course and the program levels.
-Trained Assessment Committee members in course-level assessment
-Trained Assessment Committee members in program-level assessment
-Letter to be sent to College Deans and/or College assessment coordinators notifying them of the availability of the workshops in Spring 2003

*Campus Assessment Plan
9.  Goal is to distribute the 1995 Campus Assessment Plan to the Assessment Committee and revise it in Spring 2003.

10.  Addressed travel for assessment training with Assessment Committee and set up a mechanism for soliciting names from the Colleges of persons with assessment responsibilities.
-Sent invitation to Deans and/or College assessment coordinators inviting nominations
for travel to assessment conferences, workshops, or institutes.
-Sent list of opportunities for travel to conferences, workshops, and institutes on
assessment.

11.  Coordinated with Mark Wiley of the Faculty Center for Professional Development on combining the project award funds from assessment, Enhancing Educational Effectiveness, academic computing, service learning, and internationalizing the curriculum.  Worked on a joint call for proposals and new evaluation criteria.  Call to be announced in January 2003.

12.  Participated in ad hoc task force on developing an assessment plan for General Education.
-Traveled to semi-annual meeting of all campus assessment coordinators at Sonoma State
in November;
-Participated in developing proposals for presentations at the Spring 2003 GE
Assessment Conference in Fullerton.
