Meeting of October 11, 2001

- The meeting was called to order at 2:35 PM.
- The minutes of the September 20 meeting were approved.
- The agenda was approved.
- Van Novack presented information about the role of the office of Institutional Research and discussed future changes in way his office will disseminate data to the campus. He distributed several documents outlining the services provided to the campus by his office. He announced that a demonstration of CMS (common management system) will be provided at the Pointe on October 17.
- Chair Henriques informed the committee that the Academic Senate Executive Committee recommended that we do not distribute our "White Paper" on assessment to the campus community. The Executive Committee agreed that the paper was informative and would be of significant value to the campus community, however much of the content is now inconsistent with the campus WASC report and there was concern about sending mixed messages. It was decided that the committee should consider preparing a new version of the paper and title it a "position paper" rather than a "white paper".
- Chair Henriques led a discussion about the Enhancing Educational Effectiveness call for proposals. The committee decided to table discussion of this program until the next committee meeting.
- Chair Henriques reported on her meeting with the Chair of the PRAP (Program Review and Planning) Council. The possibility of assisting the PRAP Council with the assessment component of the program review process was discussed with the PRAP Council Chair (Simeon Crowther). Chair Henriques will invite Chair Crowther to a future committee meeting to continue these discussions.
- Assessment Coordinator’s Report:
- The Assessment Committee website has been significantly upgraded by Chair Henriques.
- Susan Nummedal and Chair Henriques will travel to San Diego to meet with Peggy Maki, Director of the AAHE Assessment Forum, to discuss strategies we might use on our campus to train a group of assessment consultants.
- The committee has approximately $17,000 in remaining funds for 2001/2002.
- There will be a single call for assessment travel funds during the Fall semester.
9. The meeting was adjourned at 4:05 PM.
