Assessment Committee Meeting Minutes

March 15, 2001

Present: Colburn, Daugherty, Henriques, Lacourse (Chair), Relleve-Caveness, Reichard, Till, Weber, Whitney

  1. Approved the minutes of March 1, 2001 meeting.
  2. Assessment Coordinator position
    1. Job Description. The committee had a lengthy and fruitful discussion of the proposed job description for the Assessment Coordinator. In reviewing the draft of job duties, several suggestions were provided to amend, add, and clarify duties as described in the previous draft. A motion approving these suggested changes was passed unanimously. Please see attached revised version of the Assessment Coordinator job description.
    2. Number of assigned units & length of term. The committee considered the appropriate number of units of release time to be associated with the Assessment Coordinator position. The committee agreed that the current 6 units of release time per semester were appropriate. Any increase in the number of units for release time would decrease the University’s assessment budget considerably. The committee deemed a two-year renewable term the appropriate length of service.
    3. Procedures for Appointment. Reichard pointed out that there is currently no specific selection process for the Assessment Coordinator. Through discussion of Reichard’s ideas, the committee recommended the following procedure: A campus-wide announcement would be made for the position. Interested full-time and part-time faculty would be asked to submit a letter of intent and curriculum vita. The Assessment Committee would welcome the opportunity to serve as an advisory board for evaluating the applications. In this advisory role, the Assessment Committee could provide valuable input on the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates. These comments would be forwarded to the Provost for the final decision. A motion to recommend this procedure was passed unanimously. Lacourse to distribute exact wording.
  3. Discussion of the revisions of the White Paper on Assessment.

Several changes were suggested to the latest revision of the white paper. Suggestions included moving material regarding "recommendations" earlier into the paper, elimination of unnecessary text, and clarification that the focus of the paper is the assessment of student outcomes. Henriques has agreed to incorporate the latest revisions.

Next meeting: March, 29th

These minutes have not been approved.

Respectfully submitted,

Dave Whitney
