Assessment Committee Meeting Minutes

October 26, 2000

Present: Cynar, Colburn, Daugherty, Hague, Henriques, Lacourse (Chair), Reichard, Relleve-Caveness, Saint-Germain, Till, Weber, Whitney
  1. Approved minutes of October 12, 2000.
  2. Assessment Coordinator Saint-Germain’s report.

  3. 30 requests for travel support were received. Funding was prioritized by (a) not receiving funding in the past (b) requesting funding for an assessment-related conference, and (c) presentation at the conference. 18 requests were approved for funding by the Committee.
  4. Continuation of discussions on Program Review and Assessment Committee Goals/Objectives
  • Reichard related that the deans are also very supportive of department’s adopting a continuous Program Review approach. The question central to this concern remains: How do we institutionalize assessment? Committee members discussed the possibility of decentralizing assessment.
  • Till suggested that we need to consider not only the issue of outcomes, but also the costs required to achieve desired outcomes.
  • The Committee acknowledged that the way we view assessment should shape our use of funding.
  • Whitney suggested that faculty would be better served in both teaching and research if additional funding support is provided to Testing and Evaluation Services.
  • Colburn suggested that faculty could benefit from additional training in the use of assessment.
  • McKay is willing to serve the Assessment Committee by facilitating a session to develop our 3 to 5 year strategic goals.
  • Reichard suggested that the Committee should articulate a persuasive position on assessment. We need to help faculty see how everything we do as faculty is really part of assessment.
  • The Committee recognized the importance of timing in the request of additional resource requests from RPP. RPP deadlines for such requests are in December.
These minutes have not been approved.

Respectfully Submitted,

Dave Whitney

Next Meeting: November 9th

Note: Several Committee members have pointed out that this date conflicts with an Academic Senate meeting. As of this time, this conflict has not been resolved.
