Assessment Committee Meeting Minutes
December 14, 2000
Present: Daugherty, Lacourse (Chair), McKay, Reichard, Till, Weber, Whitney
Guest: Novack representing Institutional Research
- Approved minutes of October 26, 2000.
- Weber provided a report on the Graduate Council’s progress examining issues related to Self-Study. The following findings were discussed:
- Self-study and accreditation do often have significant overlap
- Chairs have expressed reluctance regarding self-study proposals, citing fear of additional bureaucratic requirements
- Parts of the current self-study document can be significantly improved.
- Need to identify departments that successfully conducted self-study in order to act as a model of the process for others. What factors facilitated and/or hindered self-study
3. Discussion of the development of a white paper on assessment. The following issues were debated in a lively and useful discussion:
- The white paper should help develop and maintain faculty enthusiasm for assessment
- We need to include some history/background that identifies the importance of assessment. Local history, as well as broader national environment, would be useful.
- The white paper should clearly identify and define the appropriate levels: individual (faculty), departmental (programs and departments), and University. The paper should provide examples and possible resource supports for assessment at each of these levels.
- The paper may also benefit by immediately acknowledging the often-negative image associated with the term "assessment". This term should be demystified.
- Suggested outline (a) historical context of assessment (b) definition and identification of relevant levels, (c) examples of successful implementation and (d) CSULB resources. This paper will focus on Academic Affairs.
- Daugherty, Lacourse, Saint-Germain and Whitney to work on developing an initial draft.
- Input is requested through e-mail circulation
