1. The Committee reviewed the ?1997-98 Work Summary (Revised April 16, 1998) for accuracy and completeness. Chair Dowell reported that there is continuing interest in doing the Faculty/Staff Survey in the College of Education. Administration of the survey has been targeted for fall 1998. The Committee accepted the ?Work Summary? as presented.
2. The Committee unanimously accepted the proposed ?Assessment Policy for California State University, Long Beach.
3. The Committee discussed the ?Request for Faculty Proposals? drafted by S. Nummedal. The following issues were raised:
4. Purpose/expectations of the planning grant. The Committee accepted the view that a planning grant applies to faculty that are interested in developing ?full? learning outcomes assessment proposals. Mini-studies, literature searches, feasibility studies, the framing of assessment questions were all mentioned as legitimate activities that could be funded under the planning grant option. The Committee felt that faculty who receive planning grants should submit a report of their work, but not be required to submit a full proposal after completion of the planning
grant.
5. Format of the call for proposals. Alternative formats were considered. Concern was expressed about the potential confusion in announcing two types of grants with two separate timelines in a single announcement to faculty. S. Nummedal and Chair Dowell agreed to resolve this issue outside of committee.
6. A schedule for faculty grants was developed:
May: Call for both planning and full proposals
June: Planning proposals due
Sept: Reminder for full proposals
Dec: Planning proposals due
Feb: Reminder for full proposals
Mar: Full proposals due
7. Sept. 11, 1998 was decided for holding a faculty proposal workshop.
