Campus Assessment Committee
September 16, 1997
AY 97-98 Meeting No. 1
Agenda
  • WASC issues - Dave Hood
  • Assessment priorities
  • Assessment activities
  • GE assessment
  • Meeting calendar
Meeting Notes
  • Dave Hood pointed out that with the upcoming WASC report there is a need for the committee to develop a complete assessment plan and to complete key assessment activities.
  • It was noted that the committee engaged a process for developing assessment priorities:
    • campus constituencies were identified for consultation
    • questions to guide consultation were developed by the committee
    • discussions were held with campus constituencies
    • a list of assessment priorities was developed
    • a few items were identified as high priority projects
    • details of audience, information use, timing and activities were developed for each assessment priority
  •     It was noted that some activities remain to be done
    • providing feedback to consultees
    • informing the campus of assessment plans
    • discussing the list of priorities with key campus groups
    • survey the campus regarding assessment priorities
  • It was agreed that the committee could articulate these steps into a consultation plan for developing campus assessment priorities; Don, Gerry and Alice will draft such a document for the next meeting.
  • There was dicussion of key campus documents which may contain conflicting information including
    • the chapter in the interim report to WASC
    • the attachment "Assessment Plan" in that interim report
    • the campus policy on assessment developed in about 1991 and accepted by the Senate
  • It was agreed that the committee will review these documents for discrepancies and discuss at the next meeting
  • The proposed GE survey was discussed.  Don, Henry and David developed a draft instrument and a sampling plan over the summer and had met with GEGC and the PEP council to discuss.  There were some reservations about the 'quick and dirty' nature of putting together a survey on short notice but the advantages of quick feedback on a controversial issue were identified.
  • Motion to support GE survey seconded and passed.
  • Semester meeting schedule: 9/16, 9/30, 10/14, 10/28, 11/11, 11/25, 12/9

Meeting Notes
  • Announcements
    • The GE survey has been duplicated and data collection will begin this week.  A copy of the final version was distributed.
    • Last year, an advising survey was conducted and a report has recently been distributed to the campus.  Copies will be sent to Claudia and Richard.
    • The Advising Council is conducting a survey of student perceptions of individual courses (not sections or instructors) during the mandatory fall advising process.
    • The Committee welcomed new member, Richard Tuveson.
  • The Chancellor's Office has requested information on best practices regarding assessment of learning outcomes.  The committee will send a request to all departments and deans' offices asking for examples and criteria.
  • The prospect of developing an assessment plan, per Dave Hood's request, was discussed at length.  Gerry Hanley had used search and replace on the strategic planning policy, changing "strategic planning" to "assessment".  Alice had developed an outline.  Extensive discussion ensued.  A revised subcommittee consisting of Alice, Susan N., Richard Tuveson, and Gerry will continue to work and ALL COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE ASKED TO FORWARD COMMENTS TO THIS SUBCOMMITTEE. (Note all email addresses are on the web site.)
  • MSP to proceed along dual simultaneous tracks: (1) development of a plan/policy/process for presentation to Dave Hood and the Senate and (2) efforts to implement some assessment activities this year.
  • Claudia Wright shared a draft survey of faculty to get information on assessment priorities; the commitee liked the draft very much and will discuss revisions next meeting.  Forward comments to Claudia.
  • The committee discussed potential assessment projects briefly.  Susan suggested we try to achieve depth rather than breadth.  This will be an early item next semester.
  • Meeting adjourned at 2 PM, approximately.
