CSULB Assessment Policy Information

The campus policy on assessment was adopted in July 1998 (Policy Statement 98-06) and remains in effect today.  The policy was modeled on the Nine Principles of Best Practice for Assessing Student Learning promulgated by the AAHE.

In September 2005 the Academic Senate endorsed a revised timetable and responsibilities for assessment.  This timetable established the steps to be taken by each degree program over the next five years (2005 through 2010).  Part of the responsibility of each degree program is to produce an annual report on assessment beginning in June 2006.

In March 2008 a letter was sent from the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs to the Academic Deans of all Colleges and to all College Assessment Coordinators to provide guidance for the first round of annual reports on assessment.

There are many questions that have been asked about the annual report on assessment.  The following document will provide some answers to the most frequently asked questions.

For the June 1, 2008 report, programs must report the results of assessment of student learning.

A sample template for reporting annual assessment activities has been developed, but programs may use the format that is easiest for their particular needs.  Programs with national accreditation may use the format of the accrediting body.
