Guidelines for Submission for the Outstanding Professor Award

The Outstanding Professor Award, established in 1980, is designed to encourage, reward, and publicly acknowledge outstanding professorial performance.  This award is the only award given by California State University, Long Beach that recognizes excellence in all three of the following areas: instruction and instructionally-related activities, scholarly and creative activities, and professional service.  There are no more than three awards granted annually.

Candidates who accept their nomination shall submit an application and documentation that addresses the award criteria to the Academic Senate Office on or before the second Monday of February.

Evaluation Criteria will be based on:

  • Instruction and Instructionally-Related Activities. The nominee shall have demonstrated exceptional and extensive achievements in instruction and instructionally related activities that contribute significantly to student learning and development;
  • Scholarly and Creative Activities. The nominee shall have demonstrated exceptional and extensive professional achievements that contribute significantly to the advancement of a discipline or interdisciplinary studies; and
  • Professional Service. The nominee shall have demonstrated exceptional and extensive service that contributes significantly to the mission of the University. For examples see Appendix B1, C1 and D1.

Materials needed for submission are:

  1. A completed Application Form;
  2. A 3-5 page summary statement highlighting the nominee’s accomplishments in all three categories: teaching, scholarship, and service;
  3. A current curriculum vitae;
  4. One set of exemplary teaching materials;
  5. One recent exemplar of scholarly/creative activity.
