ESL Specialist Program

The ESL Specialist Program is a language acquisition based tutoring program designed to help students improve their English language skills in order to pass the Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE).  Tutoring is offered only on a referral basis.  Listed below are a few frequently asked questions.

Is this program right for me?

If you have taken the WPE and received a score of less than 11 and have not already met with a WPE Adviser, you should immediately call (562) 985-5350 to set an appointment to do so.  If the adviser determines that this program is right for you, you will be referred to meet with one of the program coordinators to set up a tutoring schedule for you.  Students are only referred to the ESL Specialist Program if an adviser determines that their English language skills need to improve for them to pass the WPE.

What can I expect from ESL Specialist tutoring?

As with all of our tutoring programs, the goal is to produce an independent learner. Because no two students' needs are exactly the same, the ESL Tutoring coordinators develop an individual curriculum for each student based on the student's writing sample and a one-on-one interview.

The ESL Specialist Tutoring Program uses oral language to help you develop your academic English skills.  This is both the quickest and the most effective way to improve your skills.  The skills you develop will then be transferred to written work and ultimately the WPE.

How long will tutoring last?

Students meet with a tutor two times a week for one hour.  How many weeks you meet with a tutor is determined by the effort you put into learning.  Acquiring a language takes a lot of work, and no one can do the work but you!  Students who recognize the need to improve their skills -and work very hard at improving - typically receive tutoring for about two semesters.  Those students who just "show up" as scheduled and put forth very little effort take much longer.  So, the short answer is:  It's up to YOU!

How can I get permission to take the WPE again?

If you have taken the WPE two or more times and failed, you must receive WPE Advisor permission to register for the WPE a third or subsequent time.  Click here to find out what you must do to receive permission.

When should I start?

FIRST, find out if you need ESL Specialist by meeting with a WPE Adviser - call (562) 985-5350 for an appointment.  The ESL Specialist program currently serves well over two hundred students each week, and available tutoring hours can fill very quickly. If ESL Specialist tutoring is suggested, meet with an ESL Tutorial coordinator as soon as possible.

Please don't wait until your last semester to seek assistance!
