Employment at the LAC

Working at the LAC is rewarding and looks great on a resume. As a student, you may work up to 20 hours a week on campus, and may be employed by more than one program if you meet all the qualifications.

 

General Qualifications

  • You must be a CSULB student currently enrolled in 6 or more units (does not apply to Conversation Lab volunteers or if you are enrolled in GS 700).
  • You must have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • To tutor or lead an SI for any course, you must have received a grade of B (or better) in that course.
  • You must demonstrate excellent communication skills.

Student Assistant/
Receptionist

  • Provide LAC information to students, staff and faculty.
  • Schedule appointments.
  • Enter data.
  • Process calls using multi-line phone.
  • Make photocopies.
  • Send faxes.
  • Support LAC professional staff with various tasks and projects.


Hours: 6 - 15 hrs/weekly

  • Some keyboarding skills, and knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is beneficial.
  • Must have good communication skills and be open to learning new skills.
$8.50
per hour
Tutor
  • Meet with students in an individual or shared tutoring format to clarify course concepts, lectures, and readings, or practice essential skills.
  • Provide guidance in studying the subject or course.


Hours: 6 - 20 hrs/weekly

  • Upper class or graduate student.
  • Major or minor in the subject area or related field.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Note: To tutor any course, you must have received a grade of B (or better) in that course.

Supplemental Instruction
Leader

  • Help groups of 10-30 students master challenging course content through effective study strategies, such as reading, note-taking, and test-preparation.

Hours: 11 hrs per week

ESL Specialist Tutor ESL students individually or in a small group. Participate with professional staff in assessing student needs, planning curriculum and assisting students with academic English language development.

Hours: 10 - 20 hrs/weekly
  • Upper division or graduate student.
  • All Majors are welcome. English, Linguistics (esp. TESL), Bilingual Ed, foreign language, or Communication Studies preferred.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must have passed the WPE.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors.
  • Native-like fluency in standard oral & written English.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must know English grammar rules and have the ability to teach it to ESL students.

Conversation Lab Volunteer
  • Meet with ESL students individually or in a small group to enhance students' English conversation skills, grammar and fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, idioms, and application of these skills to academic tasks (oral and written).


Hours: 1 or more per week

  • Native-like fluency in standard oral and written English.
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Some understanding of difficulties of mastering a second language.
  • College degree or professional experience highly desirable.
