Admission into the Program

To be eligible for the Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Studies Program (ISP), students must meet the minimum grade point averages required by the departments in their degree programs. All prospective interdisciplinary studies program applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA in order to apply to the program.

Application Procedure

Students who have not been admitted to California State University, Long Beach, should apply to the university through the CSU Mentor application process. Current students should take the following steps.

  1. Write your proposal: When you meet with the ISP director, you will need to submit a five- to seven-page typed statement of purpose that indicates:

    • Which departments and or programs are being combined, and why;
    • An explanation of why a conventional degree is not being sought;
    • A description of how completing the interdisciplinary bachelor's degree through ISP will assist you in your academic pursuits and/or in your career aspirations.

    The proposal must be typed on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper with standard margins. This statement will become a part of your application materials. Therefore, we encourage you to take care in developing this statement, giving attention to clarity, accuracy, and neatness.

  2. Make an appointment with the ISP director: Make an appointment to present your proposal to the ISP director by visiting the University Library, Room 214, or calling (562) 985-2426.

  3. Create a program of study: After meeting with the ISP director, meet with the undergraduate advisor, or in the absence of an undergraduate advisor, the department chair from each prospective department that will be included in the degree program. With the guidance of these individuals, create a tentative program of study that can be reviewed by the ISP director.

  4. Completion of the application process: The program of study will be reviewed by the ISP director. You will be notified if you are accepted into the program. Make sure to keep a copy of your proposal and program of study for your own records. Be sure to download an Interdisciplinary Studies Handbook Adobe PDF Format.
