Undergraduate Program Application Procedures:
Initial Guidelines for the Interdisciplinary Studies Major Student
To be eligible to apply to the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, an undergraduate student must have at least an overall grade point average equal to that required for transfer into the major program in their special major. This is generally at least a grade point average of 2.0, but may be higher. Beyond this initial requirement, the student must be willing to invest time in researching their objective and writing their proposal for submission to the Program Director at their first meeting.
For more information, contact Dr. Tim Caron, Director Honors and Interdisciplinary Studies, at (562) 985-4233 or Duan Jackson, Assistant Director, at (562) 985-4706.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
FOR A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN THE
INTERDISCIPLINARY
STUDIES PROGRAM
1) New students should apply to CSULB and the Interdisciplinary
Studies Program through the CSU mentor application process. Continuing students should contact Professor Costa to apply.
2) PROPOSAL: A
three to four-page type written statement of purpose that indicates
which departments and or programs are being combined, and why; an
explanation for why a conventional degree is not being sought; and
a description of how completing the special bachelor's degree through ISP
will assist you in your academic pursuits and/or in your career
aspirations.
The Proposal must be typed
on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper with standard margins. This statement
initially represents you to the Director of the Interdisciplinary
Studies Program. Subsequently, it becomes a part of the application
materials. Therefore, it behooves an applicant to take care in developing
this statement giving attention to its clarity, accuracy, and neatness.
3) INTERVIEW WITH THE
PROGRAM DIRECTOR OF THE INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES PROGRAM
Make an appointment with
the director of the Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Studies Program, FO5,
Room 208, (562) 985-2426. To this meeting bring the typewritten Proposal
for initial review (alternatively you can e-mail a copy to Dr. Costa
at dmc@csulb.edu).
4) COMPLETION OF APPLICATION
PROCESS
Meet with the undergraduate
advisor, or in the absence of an undergraduate advisor, meet with
the department chair from each prospective department to be included in the degree program.
With the guidance of these individuals, create a tentative program
of study, subject to the Director of ISP's approval.
The following materials
compose the official Application to an Interdisciplinary Studies
Master's Degree Program: l) The Proposal; and 2) the Student
Program for the Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies.
These materials are reviewed
by the Director of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, whose
signature on the Student Program for a Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary
Studies signals acceptance to the program. Once an applicant
is accepted he or she will be notified of their acceptance by mail.
5) Make sure to
keep a copy of your proposal and program of study for your own records.
Students can obtain an
Interdisciplinary Studies Handbook from the ISP website.
