Foreign Scholar Updates
J-1 "D/S" (Duration of Status)
J-1 scholars and their J-2 family members are admitted
to the U.S. for "duration of status" (D/S) as noted on the I-94
card. They are allowed to remain in the U.S. until the ending date
on their DS-2019s, as well as an additional (30) thirty day grace
period.
New J-1 Categories
A new category is "Short-Term Scholar" which has no
minimum stay (all other categories have a three-week minimum stay).
Short-term scholars can visit for up to four months, but have no
possibility of extending beyond four months. Because of the inflexibility,
we plan to use the "Short-Term Scholar" category only in the rarest
of cases.
Health Insurance
All international faculty, scholars or other persons
possessing and maintaining a current passport and valid visa status
(J-1/J-2) are required to be insured. The regulation requires that
we terminate scholar's participation in our J-1 program if we determine
that they or their family members willfully fail to comply with
the health insurance requirement. (See our sheet on minimum coverage).
Health insurance information is provided to all J-1 scholars under
CSULB sponsorship in advance of their arrival in the United States.
Program Administration
There are significant requirements for administering
our J-1 program. We need your help to know when J-1 scholars arrive
and when they depart. ALL scholars must report to the Center for
International Education within ten days of arrival into the U.S.
The process takes less than ten minutes and enables our office to
record a current address, phone number and make copies of their
passport, visa, etc.

Travel Advisory
The Department of State (DOS) now requires a personal
interview. ALL applicants for non-immigrant visas E-1, E-2, F-1,
F-2, J-1, J-2, H-3, H-4, I, L-1A, L-1B, L-2, M-1, O-1, O-2, O-3,
P-1, P-2, will likely face a delay of several weeks to several months
in order to obtain a non-immigrant visa. The Department of State
expects that for the indefinite future, many embassies/consulates
will face processing backlogs, so please plan accordingly and in
a timely manner. In order to avoid delays and disruptions to University
business, travel arrangements should be made months in advance.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Center
for International Education (562) 985-4106.
J-1 Sponsorship through the CSULB-Center for International Education
in one of the scholar categories is appropriate for post-graduates
and professionals coming to CSULB on a temporary basis. Non-tenure-track
faculty and certain academic and sponsored research staff members
qualify for CSULB's J-1 program sponsorship. Typical titles are
Visiting Scholar, Visiting Faculty-Member, Lecturer, or Research-Scholar.
Scholars must have enough money to live during their visit to CSULB.
The forms are available as Administrative Templates on the World
Wide Web at the following address:
