INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK 2008

Monday Nov 17th

9:00 am to 6:00 pm USU Beach Ballrooms
International Symposium: Global Women’s Organizations Negotiate Religion

Dr. Ellen Gruenbaum of Purdue University will speak about the practice of female circumcision in Sierra Leone amongst Muslims and Christians. Both Muslims and Christians in Sierra Leone believe in the reality of witchcraft, and the fear of it is part of the reinforcement of the beliefs in practicing this initiation--into the Bundu (or Bondo) or Sande society. The women's organizations in both Sierra Leone and Sudan have indeed had a challenge defining the opposition to the practice in religious terms. In Sudan, Muslim teachers are being recruited to articulate Islamic anti-circumcision theology, and in Sierra Leone, Pentecostal ministers are taking the lead, both of them working with women's organizations.

Dr. Sherine Hafez, from UC Riverside, will speak of women’s Islamic movements in Egypt. The title of her latest book is The Terms of Empowerment: Islamic Women's Activism in Cairo. She describes her presentation: “In investigating Islamic women's activism in Cairo, my goal is to interpret the impact of their activism on the production of desire and subjectivity. My talk is concerned with asking how Egyptian women find empowerment in Islamism when Islamists have traditionally been viewed as the opposers of women's liberation around the world? Do women find empowerment in Islamism or is
this newly found bond with Islam a form of "false consciousness?" How can Islamic activism empower Muslim women in Egypt today? To search for answers to these questions without representing Islamic women's movement in Cairo as a stage in the progression of Egyptian society towards the grand narrative of modernity, it is important to elevate the discussion to one that views these Islamic women as situated within the specific historical circumstances which produce their desires and subjectivities.”

Azza Basarudin, a PhD candidate from UCLA, will focus on the faith-centered struggle of Malaysian intellectual-activists for gender justice and social transformation in Islam. She will explore gender politics and religious activism as a site for contesting conventional Islamic exclusivity to (re)imagine a Muslim Ummah that is inclusive of women’s concerns, experiences and realities within the transnational discourse of Muslim/Islamic feminisms.

CSULB Student Panelists:

Lacette Price will speak about African eco-feminisms.
Jessica Safani will present her findings on the topic of economic hardship and the rise of dominionism within the United States, and the ways in which women have been both complicit in fueling the movement and in fighting against it.

Julie Claypool will analyze postmodernism as it applies to the study of women and religion in the developing world.

Inicianando en las Americas (MIA) with whom she met with a series of
