Housing Assistance

The Center for International Education (CIE) is available to assist international students seeking accommodations while attending CSULB. However, it is ultimately each student's responsibility to make their own housing arrangements. The CIE employs a part-time Graduate Assitant as the CIE Housing Coordinator to assist students with their housing needs.

Housing

On-Campus Housing:  CSULB dormitory housing is severely limited and cannot be guaranteed. On-campus housing is managed by the CSULB Housing & Residential Life Office. Questions regarding on-campus housing should be directed to the CSULB Housing & Residential Life Office (housing@csulb.edu).

Upon acceptance as an exchange student at CSULB, the Center for International Education (CIE) will assign each exchange student a CSULB Student Identification Number (Student ID). Your CSULB Student ID Number will be emailed to the email address you indicated on your exchange application once you are admitted to the exchange program.  You can use your CSULB Student ID Number to apply for on-campus housing using the online application as described above. Housing is assigned based on the order your completed housing license (application) and payment are received at the CSULB Housing & Residential Life Office. Students are strongly encouraged to apply as early as possible and to mail their completed housing application (housing license) with payment as quickly as possible using express mail service. There is no application fee.

Students who miss the CSULB on-campus housing application deadline or who apply late and are placed on the CSULB housing waiting list are strongly encouraged to consider other housing options.  Please refer to the "Non-CSULB Housing Options" section of this webpage located below.

When choosing a dormitory, the Center for International Education recommends the following choices in order of preference: 1) International House; 2) Residence Commons; 3) Parkside Commons; 4) Los Cerritos Hall or Los Alamitos Hall.  Residence Commons offers some single occupancy rooms (no roommate), but are based on availability and may not be offered as an option each semester.

On-Campus Housing Status
If you have applied for on-campus housing and have questions about your application status, costs, deposit fees, acceptable methods of payment, move in dates, or the facilities please directly contact the Housing & Residential Life Office at email: (housing@csulb.edu) or visit their website: www.csulb.edu/housing.

FALL Semester: Exchange students who plan to begin their studies during Fall Semester and who would like to be eligible to apply for on-campus housing must have their completed exchange applications and all required documents received by the Center for International Education no later than February 13. Housing applications for Fall semester are accepted online beginning early March. The Housing & Residential Life Office will consider late housing applicants after on-time applicants have been placed. Housing contracts are only granted for a full academic year (two semesters).  Students granted on-campus housing, but only participating in a one-semester exchange program should sign the academic-year contract, and then will file a request to vacate form with the Housing & Residential Life Office in early November to apply to end their housing contract early.  Failure to directly notify the CSULB Housing & Residential Life Office using a request to vacate form by the published deadline will result in additional and substantial room and board charges being owed.

SPRING Semester:
Housing availability for Spring semester is based on the number of current CSULB students who vacate the University’s dormitories after the fall semester.  Housing is assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis, so exchange students seeking on-campus housing accommodations are strongly encouraged to apply early.  Completed exchange applications and all required documents must be received by the Center for International Education no later than October 1.  The Housing & Residential Life Office will consider late housing applicants after on-time applicants have been placed.

CSULB offers an International House (I-House) residence hall option.  Exchange students are strongly encouraged to apply to live in the I-House.  Students who have already been accepted by CSULB for an exchange program and who have already applied for on-campus housing may check the status of their application at the Housing & Residential Life Office website. All questions regarding on-campus housing should be directed to the Housing & Residential Life Office (housing@csulb.edu).

Failure to comply with all CSULB Housing & Residential Life Office deadlines and requirements may result in the forfeiture of your on-campus housing or cancellation of your housing application.

Boarding House: Elizabeth Manor is a large, private home in the city of Long Beach that has been completely remodeled to provide shared or private rooms for up to 10 students.  Though CSULB is not affiliated with the operation of Elizabeth Manor, many exchange and international students have lived at the house and highly recommend both the facilities and the owner of the house.  Bedding (bed sheets, blankets, pillows, towels) is provided and wireless DSL Internet service and onsite laundry included at no extra charge.  All rooms are fully furnished (bed, chairs, lights, etc.) and all utilities included in the price of the room. Access to public transportation and a grocery store located within one block.  You may directly contact the owner of the house, Ms. Yarina Cerniaz, with questions or for information on how to apply.  Please be sure to identify yourself as a CSULB exchange student to receive a special price discount. Email: yarina@elizabethmanor.com
Phone: (562) 434-2395 or cell phone: (562) 335-3991.

Off-Campus Housing Assistance:  Students unable to reserve on-campus housing or who prefer to live in an apartment or house have many options available in and around the city of Long Beach.  It is recommended that you begin your search well in advance of your arrival to find the living situation right for your needs. CIE also maintains a housing board in its office where those offering apartments or rooms for rent and those seeking roommates or accommodations may post notices. CIE offers this service as a courtesy to our students and is unable to make any warranties or guarantees as to the suitability of such postings.

Temporary Housing:
It is not always possible to move into your housing accommodations upon arrival.  There are a variety of short-term housing options available located near the University. Through the International Student Arrival Assistance Program the CIE has a limited number of volunteers who are available to assist new exchange students upon their arrival.   If you are interested, we will try to arrange to have someone meet you at the airport upon your arrival and provide you with temporary housing for up to 3 nights.
