Exchange Candidates
CSULB places no special restrictions on the subjects exchange students may study.  The CSULB Course Catalog is the master list of all courses that may be offered by the University and contains class descriptions. The Schedule of Classes is the master list of classes offered by the University for a specific semester. ONLY classes listed in the Schedule of Classes for the semester your exchange program will begin are available for registration.
CSULB cannot guarantee course availability or academic eligibility to enter any specific courses.

Class Levels
Undergraduate classes are numbered 100-499.  Graduate classes are numbered 500-799 and can only be taken by graduate students.  Classes numbered 100-299 provide the fundamental principles and theories student must master prior to attempting to take more specialized and advanced classes.  Classes numbered 300-499 offer more specialized and advanced concepts and are intended for students who have already completed the fundamental courses in a particular area of study at their home universities.  Students who have not satisfied the prerequisite classes at their home universities prior to arriving at CSULB will be permitted to enroll in advanced courses entirely at the discretion of the academic departments and professors. Exchange Participants
Once your exchange application has been received and reviewed you will receive an email confirmation of your acceptance to the exchange program with your assigned CSULB Student ID Number and additional information on housing and classes.  After acceptance to the exchange program, exchange students are required to submit via email an updated and final list of requested CSULB classes as well as a PDF version of their most current academic transcripts. Students should review their initial list of requested classes using the online Schedule of Classes to confirm that their desired classes are indeed offered during a particular semester. It is important to note that some classes have a required laboratory or activity section that must be taken concurrently. Students who submit their final list of classes to the Center for International Education (CIE) in a timely manner have the best chance of registering in the courses they want. Upon receipt of the final list of requested classes, the CSULB Exchange Coordinator will register students in as many of their class choices as possible.  It is recommended students remain registered in more classes than they require until the start of the semester since some departments may cancel classes.  Exchange students must register in a minimum of 9 units and remain enrolled in a minimum of 9 units each semester.  Students may register in a maximum of 18 units each semester.
CIE recommends a maximum enrollment of 12 units each semester.

Minimum Academic Requirements

Exchange students are required to maintain good academic standing, which the University defines as a minimum Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) of 2.0, and to register in and maintain enrollment in a minimum of 9 units of coursework each semester. Failure to maintain enrollment in 9 units or to maintain good academic standing will result in a J-1 status violation and the immediate termination of the exchange student's program.

Class Attendance
Students are expected to attend classes on a regular basis.  Classroom participation is often expected and may be considered in the calculation of your final grade.  Professors may disenroll students who fail to attend the first day of class. However, students should not presume that they have automatically been withdrawn from a course they never attended.  It is the student's responsibility to officially withdraw from a class.

The Center for International Education (CIE) and CSULB are unable to guarantee the availability of classes or exchange student eligibility to enroll in specific classes.
