Parent Orientation Program - 2008

As a parent of a freshman, you and your son or daughter are now a part of the CSULB family.  As parents, you can play critical roles in your son's or daughter's ability to succeed in higher education, especially in this first year at CSULB.

Each summer the Parent Orientation Program offers parents the opportunity to learn about the academic requirements necessary to obtain a baccalaureate degree. During this day-long orientation, you'll receive a classroom experience to better understand faculty expectations of your son or daughter, you interact with a panel of support staff who will discuss campus safety, financial aid, housing, and other related issues. The program concludes at about 3:30 p.m. with an optional self-guided campus tour. If you are interested in the self-guided tour, please let us know during the day.

Although attendance for parents is not mandatory, POP empowers you to serve as a valuable resource for your son or daughter.   Because of the Program's popularity, reservations are taken on a first-come first-serve basis.  We look forward to seeing you this summer at POP. Together we can provide a solid foundation for your entering freshman.

Fee

The fee, which is $30 per parent attendee, for the orientation includes parking, lunch, a parent's handbook, and two years of access to POP Partners, our free parent newsletter.

Location

The program takes place in the Psychology Building, room 150 (PSY-150) on the CSULB campus.

Reservations

If your student has been accepted to CSULB, you will receive a mailed invitation to POP in mid-May. A registration form will be attached to that mailer. You may register for POP by using that form or by by printing, filling out, and mailing in the on-line registration form (see below). Enclose your check or a money order (made payable to CSULB-POP) and mail it to:

Cancellations & refunds

No full refunds will be granted, however, partial refunds of $15 per registered attendee will be issued if timely notification of the cancellation is received.  Refund requests must be submitted in writing and received by the POP/Academic Advising Center no later than five business days before your workshop date. Refunds will be processed in mid-August and mailed in late September.

Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR)

SOAR is a program for students presented by the STARS/SOAR office. Freshmen students will receive information about SOAR workshop dates. For further information, visit the SOAR web site or call (562) 985-5515.

Housing and Residential Services will be offering tours directly following each Parent Orientation Program on Fridays only (Saturday tours are not available).

The Campus

The hilltop portion, of the 322-acres comprising CSULB, overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Eighty permanent buildings house the various colleges, the 63 academic departments and programs, the 24 centers, four institutes, and four clinics.

Special Information

• If you have a physical disability and need special accommodations, please call us at (562) 985-5458 several days before your POP date.

• Bring a sweater or light jacket and wear comfortable walking shoes (especially for walking to and from the parking area).

• POP is presented in English.

• Seating is limited. We are often unable to accommodate non-registered guests (i.e. children, visiting relatives, etc.). Please call us ahead if something unexpected occurs in your attendance plan.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We do not accept cash or credit cards. A fee will be charged for returned checks.

POP Partners Newsletter

We recognize that the family is very important to the success of our students.  POP Partners is a free newsletter for families filled with important articles and information about what's happening in the University.  As a POP participant, you automatically have two years of access to the POP Partners Newsletters.

The POP Partners newsletter helps parents stay on top of academic issues that directly impact their student's University experience.  The newsletter includes information about CSULB art exhibits, theater and musical events, lectures, and other campus events.
