FAQ - Major

What is the "ten-year rule" and when is it in effect?

The ten-year rule took effect in 1996. At that time all upper division courses required for the major must be completed within the ten-year period preceding work toward the baccalaureate, or major departments may request revalidation of all upper division major course work.  Revalidation requires demonstration of competence or knowledge of the subject as prescribed by the department offering the course(s). Undergraduate students graduating before 1996 will not be affected by the ten-year rule. It is the major department's prerogative to revalidate or not.
