Probation

Academic probation is different than financial aid probation. Students on financial aid probation should see a financial aid counselor in the Financial Aid office located in Brotman Hall, room 101.

Academic Probation

The University expects all undergraduate students to maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in all classes taken at CSULB and in all transferable courses from other colleges and universities. Academic probation at CSULB results when students' grades fall below the 2.0 GPA in either CSULB cumulative GPA (all courses at CSULB), or in the overall cumulative GPA (all transferable college courses, including CSULB work). Students are subject to academic disqualification at the end of the first semester on academic probation if they have GPAs below the four (4) minimum cumulative (CUM) GPAs as follows:

Freshman (fewer than 30 units completed)   1.5 GPA
Sophomore (30 - 59 units completed)   1.7 GPA
Junior (60 - 89 units completed)   1.85 GPA
Senior (90 + units completed)   1.95 GPA

Students whose cumulative GPAs are higher than those listed above can remain on academic probation for two consecutive semesters before academic disqualification takes place.

Strategies for Academic Success Probation Intervention Program is a university-wide program (located in the UCUA, Horn Center, Room 103) designed for undergraduate students who are on academic probation.  Throughout the year, the University Center for Undergraduate Advising provides special workshops that include information about university policies and procedures, the reasons why students encounter academic problems, and how to receive help and support from campus services and offices.

Invitations to attend these special "Strategies" workshops are emailed to students on academic probation so it is extremely important that your email address on "My CSULB" be current and that you check your email regularly.

Attendance in this program is highly recommended. If you actively participate in a Strategies for Academic Success workshop, complete at least one follow-up activity, AND make academic progress, you may appeal and may be allowed to extend your academic probation for one extra semester to bring your GPA back to a 2.0 or above.
