Disqualification

Academic disqualification means dismissal from CSULB and is the result of not maintaining good academic standing.

The University expects all undergraduate students to maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in all classes taken at CSULB and in all transferable courses from other colleges and universities. Academic probation at CSULB results when students' grades fall below the 2.0 GPA in either the CSULB cumulative GPA (all courses at CSULB), or in the overall cumulative GPA (all transferable college courses, including CSULB work). Students are subject to academic disqualification at the end of the first semester on academic probation if they have GPAs below the four (4) minimum cumulative (CUM) GPAs as follows:

Freshman (fewer than 30 units completed)   1.5 GPA
Sophomore (30 - 59 units completed)   1.7 GPA
Junior (60 - 89 units completed)   1.85 GPA
Senior (90 + units completed)   1.95 GPA

Once disqualified, students will be considered eligible for reinstatement if they have:

  • remained out of CSULB for one (1) regular semester
  • raised their grade point deficiency by one half
  • raised their GPA
  • made progress toward their degree

Students whose CSULB or overall GPAs are higher than the four listed above but below 2.0 can remain on academic probation for two consecutive semesters and are then subject to academic disqualification.

To prepare for your participation in the reinstatement workshop, please do the following:

1. Download (and bring to the workshop) these four (4) forms:

Bachelor's Degree Worksheet

What is Academic Disqualification

Deficiency Worksheet (Form A)

Repetition of Courses Summary

2. Using your CSULB unofficial transcripts only (which you must also bring to the workshop) and a pencil, fill out the Deficiency Worksheet (Form A) and the Repetition of Courses Summary. If anything seems confusing, do your best and we will clarify the information at the workshop.

  • To fill out the Deficiency Worksheet (Form A) - Write the courses you've taken at CSULB on the Deficiency Worksheet (Form A), the number of units for each class, and the grade you received in the course. Do not include CR/NC, W, or courses numbered below 100 (example: MATH-10). IMPORTANT - When filling out this form DO NOT include transfer coursework or courses taken after disqualification. Bring this form with you to the workshop.

  • To fill out the Repetition of Courses Summary - Write down the courses that you could possibly repeat for grade forgiveness, those you have successfully repeated, and those courses that were not successfully repeated for grade forgiveness (you did not earn a C or higher on the second attempt). Bring this form with you to the workshop.

Bring all the above forms AND your unofficial transcripts (from all the schools you've attended) to the workshop.

If you have registered for the workshop and cannot make it, please contact us to cancel your reservation to allow another student the opportunity to take your place. Our workshop phone number is 562-985-7847.

Academic Appeal of Disqualification

Undergraduate students who believe that there were extenuating circumstances that led to their academic disqualification may file an appeal asking to extend their academic probation by an additional semester.  Students must submit their appeals immediately following notification by Enrollment Services that they have been disqualified.  In reviewing appeals, the Academic Appeals Committee will consider the following criteria:

  • Did the student provide documentation of extenuating circumstances?
  • Did the student complete the Strategies for Academic Success Probation Intervention Program?
  • Did the student demonstrate academic progress?
  • Did the student make tangible changes that will lead to future academic success?

As of August 1, 2009, Appeals of Academic Disqualification will no longer be accepted for students disqualified at the end of the spring 2009 semester. Please refer to the University Center for Undergraduate Advising’s disqualification webpage for information on how to be reinstated to CSULB.
