Controlling E-mail Spam

SPAM is e-mail that contains unwanted content or solicitations. Many may also be fraudulent or dangerous because they can be delivered with attachments containing viruses or worms, direct you to web sites that may have viruses or worms, or are phishing ploys.

Network Services is continually working to reduce the number of spam messages delivered to CSULB e-mail inboxes, but to date there is no permanent solution. Spammers use sophisticated tools in their creation process and therefore are moving targets. While our best advice at this time is to simply delete the message as you would throw away junk mail, there are a couple of measures you can take to help control spam:

  • Do not reply to spam e-mails. This only verifies that your e-mail is active and valid, potentially leading to even more spam messages.
  • When you complete online forms for sites or newsgroups, use a different account other than your primary account. Most likely your e-mail address will be released to third parties.
  • When you send an e-mail with a large number of recipients, make sure you hide the list of recipients by using the "bcc" field. This makes it more difficult for the list to be intercepted and re-used.
  • Configure Webmail to filter spam.
