Email Spam

Spam is a major issue and all reported incidents are taken seriously and recorded. This prepared text is designed to address the most common issues affecting our campus, however unique or more serious issues may be addressed specifically with the Technology Service Desk.

Network Services is working on a daily basis to lessen the impact of the problem on campus, but to date there is no permanent solution. Spammers are using sophisticated tools in their work, and therefore are moving targets. While our best advice at this time is to simply delete the message as you would throw away junk mail, there are a couple of simple measures you can take as an individual to lessen your chances of receiving spam in the future:

  • Do not reply to spam emails. This only verifies that your email is active and valid, potentially leading to even more junk.
  • When subscribing or filling out forms online for sites or newsgroups, use a different account other than your primary account. Most likely your email address will be released to third parties.
  • When you receive an email with a large recipient lists, make sure you hide the list of recipients by using the "bcc" field. This makes it more difficult for the list to be intercepted and re-used.
